by SusanM

Find out why it can be so hard to make that first appointment with a psychologist and if feeling nervous means it's a bad idea.

Do you think seeing a psychologist would help you feel more relaxed or happier? Do you think it would be nice to have someone who can help you along your life journey? But is anxiety or fear of making that appointment stopping you?

It's is very common for people to delay seeing a psychologist, even when they want to. If you are one of these people it can help to know something about this problem and how to solve it.

Why Do People Go to a Psychologist?

A large number of people go to psychologist or counselor for a wide variety of reasons.

It may be because of a sense of grief. Feelings of panic or phobia that are linked to problems with anxiety. Or just for some advice about how to deal with a difficult situation you find yourself in. The right psychologist can be a great help but often people do it alone because they can't make that first appointment.

You may be surprised to hear that ringing up to make your first appointment with a psychologist can be really intimidating. Something that is put off not just for days - but sometimes even months or years. This feeling of anxiety is totally normal so it is such a shame that it stops people from making that call.

Anxiety is often something we feel when we try something new. You don't know what to do or what to expect and this can make us feel anxious. This is a part of life and common with any new experience.

In the case of making an appointment with a psychologist it may be made worse by the old fashioned stigma that was once placed upon people who received psychological treatment. Now days psychologists help both with many different types of problems and also with life coaching so there should not be any stigma unless a person is truly unaware of what psychologists and counselors do.

Some people have been brought up with the idea that you don't go to others for help - ever. This can make the decision to see a psychologist much harder. It can also make picking up the phone to make that call more difficult than it should be. Sometimes people can also feel like the whole world will know if they go to a psychologist. But remember going to a psychologist can be kept private. You only need to tell those who you wish to share this information with. There is no reason why your friends or other people need to know unless you want to discuss it with them. Knowing this can often make the thought of going to a psychologist far less intimidating.

Is it a Good Idea?

It takes a big amount of understanding to know that it's not best to do it all alone. This is especially true during difficult times. You already have professional and informal helpers like your doctor, family, and friends who you go to for help and support. A professional person like a psychologist is just another person you can go to. If you look at it in this way it can help decrease your anxiety about going to a psychologist.

Many psychologist can also be contacted by email. So if you really can't make that call you might find sending an email easier.

So remember feeling anxious when you are trying to find the best psychologist and make your first appointment does not mean you have made the wrong choice. Once you have made had your first appointment it’s common to find things get easier. This is because going to a psychologist becomes an experience you know. This makes it less scary and intimidating.
