Hobbit and LOTR Lego Sets with Gollum

by Marie

Review of Riddles for the Ring and other fun Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Lego sets which feature the poor creature Gollum or Smeagol as he is otherwise known in the fantasy tale.

The Hobbit is one of my all-time favorite childhood books and I do love to collect Lego sets, books, toys, keepsakes and collectibles based on this Middle Earth fantasy. Gollum, or Smeagol as he is otherwise known, is a rather pathetic character who is despised and loathed by many due to his rather sickening appearance and ugly nature and personality.

Riddles for the Ring is a small Hobbit Lego box set but one that is great to get because it features some very key pieces which are essential to the main story as written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Those key pieces are the One Ring, Creature Gollum minifig, Bilbo Baggins minifig and Bilbo's sword called Sting. It's not my favorite set but it is a very inexpensive way to get hold of some real key parts and makes an awesome stocking filler or small gift for any fan. Find out where else you can get this creature too.

Riddles for the Ring Lego Set

Cheapest Way to Get 2 Key Minifigs & Parts from the Hobbit Story

Riddles for the Ring is a small Lego set which I bought to add to my collection since I particularly wanted the Creature Gollum (formerly called Smeagol) and also, and more importantly, the tiny key and essential piece of the ONE RING because it is used throughout all The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. Since it is a little set it actually makes a great stocking stuffer for a fan of all things Middle Earth.

You're actually supposed to get just one ONE RING in this set, it is even listed as so in the manual, but I was lucky to get two of them (very lucky since they are tiny and easily lost if not careful) and other people have reported getting two as well although others have had just one and two pieces of Bilbo's sword Sting instead - when there should just be one. So I was very happy about that. It is not the only set that this piece appears in but it is the least expensive set where it does so.

It's not my favorite Hobbit Lego set but for a really low price you get the hideous Creature Gollum with his moving arms, raw fish and some discarded bones from some unfortunates that he has eaten.

I love the Bilbo Baggins minifig which has a concerned face on one side and an absolutely terrified face on the other which makes me laugh every time I see it. You get the One Ring and Bilbo's famous sword, Sting, plus Gollum's little boat and a rock section which has a secret compartment which the ring can be hidden in.

Gollum in Riddles for the Ring Lego

Of course, it allows play on the key moment when the Hobbit Bilbo meets this rather deformed creature for the first time and also when Bilbo acquires the ring and steals it away from a bereft Gollum. In the book by Tolkien, that's all we see of this creature; he actually plays a far bigger part in the books that make up The Lord of the Rings. That means it's a good character to get hold of since it can have a lot of story value in Lego role play. See some more suggestions from me on other sets that would work particularly well with this one and other sets featuring this sad creature.

Gollum takes the Hobbits Frodo and Sam into the Lair of Shelob, the Giant Spider. This is another set that features the ONE RING and Gollum though it is a little more expensive.

Shelob the Giant Spider may bear some relation to the Giant Spiders from Mirkwood forest although Shelob is both older and bigger. In any case, these two sets could be a lot of fun played with together! On their journey to Mordor, Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee and Gollum approach The Black Gate which is the only commonly known entrance into it. The Creature persuades the Hobbits that there is another way ...

While Bilbo was off with his encounter with Gollum, the rest of the Hobbit dwarves he was split from were battling with the Goblin King. It would make sense to have The Riddles of the Ring and this set together since both characters of the Goblin King and the Creature lived in the Misty Mountains. I hope you've enjoyed reading my wizzles page today, thanks for your visit. Enjoy the Lego.

These are great gift ideas. I have a brother who loves legos and Tolkien. I should give him one. I haven't read any of these books so you have made it easy for me to figure out which one is best for him.
