How To Sketch A Cartoon Dog Step By Step
Draw A Cartoon Dog Tutorial
When learning how to draw a Cartoon Dog, it's best to follow an example first and then from there try and draw your own interpretation of it so that you learn. Here is another drawing tutorial which is in the same spirit as the How To Draw A Cartoon Cat one I did previously, but this time we attempt to draw a Cartoon Dog step by step yet again with drawing illustrations along the way.
As always you can start off with a round oval shape that represents the head and work on the curve that is the foundation for the body and from there follow the step by step pictures and try to draw this Dog idea in Cartoon form.
Sketching In Some Doggy Details
Your Cartoon Dog Needs Eyes, Ears And Other Stuff
Now that you have a basic framework you can start to add the all important features like eyes and ears and nose etc. This is when you can alter anything if it doesn't look right and also you can see the Dog design come together quite quickly after this stage.
Draw In The Eyes And Other Features
Loosely Marking In The Dogs Features Now And Start To Darken The Pencil Lines
Define And Add Details To Your Dog Drawing
Darker pencil lines help to make your cartoon Dog drawing more clearer and it's your last chance to improve the drawing as you go along too. Try to keep the details simple and very basic for any cartoon that you sketch.
Don't worry about getting it right first time. Just have fun drawing.
Use An Ink Pen To Ink The Full Pencil Drawing
Ink Your Drawing
Using a gel ink pen or any kind of ink pen you can draw over your pencil lines and improve the drawing at the same time. The idea is to try and add small details and slight touches that help bring your Cartoon Dog to life.
The more you get used to inking your work, the better at it you get and your art style will emerge eventually bringing a sense of capability and confidence to your Cartoon drawings.
Color Your Cartoon Dog Drawing
Coloring With Crayola Twistables
I used Crayola Twistable pencils to color in this Cartoon Dog drawing. I hope that your own drawing is looking exactly how you want it! Now I used a few colors for this one:
- A Dark Brown for the Dogs fur.
- An Orange for the Dogs Fur Mid tone
- A Yellow for the highlight on the Dogs fur
- Red for the collar
- Blue for the eyes
- And a Peach color for the Dogs Mouth
If you want your drawing to look smoother I suggest using a White Crayola pencil to blend all of the colors together, but that's not essential really.
Have fun drawing this and many other Cartoon drawings I have planned!

Drawing A Cartoon Dog
The first paragraph to the first subheading, How To Sketch A Cartoon Dog Step By Step Draw A Cartoon Dog Tutorial, advises drawing from example and then drawing from personal imagination and interpretation.
What does one do if following an example inspires imagination? Does one quickly note the personal interpretation or does one focus upon the example alone?
