With so many people reaching for any form of motivation to lose weight, I thought this is as good a time as any to provide the facts on obesity. 

Regardless of how fat you are, fat is fat and it is the leading cause of disease and illness.  

Recent research findings spot light how obesity impacts the development of Alzheimer. Obesity, high cholesterol and diabetes, all weight related illness, increase your risk of developing this disease and many others.  Weight gain contributes to diseases that if gone unchecked manifest into serious life threatening conditions.  It is no wonder this disease alone is on the rise as the obesity epidemic increases. Read on to get the wake up call you need to get motivated!

 

Is Shapewear Safe?

Shapewear is a good tool to first hide fat and second to open your eyes to the fact that you are overweight.

If you wear shapewear that is fine, it is not bad, in fact it is a great eye opener making you aware you should lose a few pounds. If you have a hard time getting into your shapewear you may be obese. 

Why Being Fat is Serious

When determining your ideal weight you should first know your bone structure or size.  Although I am 5' 10" female, I have a small bone structure and therefore feel most comfortable weighing on the low end of my height range. The size of your bone structure is vital to know as other wise you may tend to think its okay to weigh the heaviest amount per your height and weight chart when it is not. We've all heard the familiar phrase, "I'm big boned."  This is a cop out!

Stop Making Excuses to Honestly Answer the Question, "Am I Fat"

To determine your ideal weight you must know if you have a small, medium or large bone structure.  My favorite way to determine this is the elbow test. Measuring the elbow is easy an way to learn your real bone structure.  I find the wrist method to be a bit easier but less accurate as many people measure the wrong area of the wrist.  The bones of the elbow are unmistakable in terms of exact location and therefore better calculate your true bone size.

How to Know Bone Structure Size

It's important to know what size frame your body is or your bone structure size, small boned, medium or large.

The Elbow Method

  1. Stand up and raise your arm in front of you to a 90 degree angle, as seen in the picture to your left.  It will form the shape of a backwards L.
  2. Locate the two bones protruding, the two bones at the bend of the elbow, see the picture once again to confirm you have the right spot. Once you find them turn your palm to the right and touch both joints with calipers, remove the calipers and measure the distance between the two points, write this number down.
  3. Use the chart below to determine your bone structure size.

Know How Height and Weight Matter

How tall you are plus your frame both are important in determining what you should weigh.

Height and Frame for Woman

  • Heights of  5’ 2” or less with an elbow width of 2 ¼ - 2 ½ inches equals a medium build, measurements lower than this are small framed and those higher are large framed.
  • Heights of 5’ 3” - 5” 10” with an elbow width of 2 ¼ - 2 ¾ equals a medium frame, those lower a small frame while those higher a large frame.  


Note: remember I mentioned I’m 5’10”?  The distance between my elbow joints is 1 ¾ inches, I therefore have a small frame, understand?  Great!

Heights of 5’ 11” and up with an elbow width of 2 ½ - 2. ¾ equals a medium frame, those lower a small frame while those higher a large frame.

Once you understand your body frame size you can determine your real ideal weight.  You can now tailor fit your appropriate weight to your body type.  We are all unique in this manner it is therefore important to know your bone structure and easy to know how now that you are here.

Note: A person weighing the heaviest weight per their height chart range is over weight if they have a small bone structure. The lightest amount of weight per chart range is considered healthy for someone in the height range with a small bone structure, thus the medium to heavy weight limit relates to medium to large bone structures.

Thanks Dustytoes, great to hear from you. I love the portable bike extension for under the desk. The trick to staying thin at any age and especially after 30 or 40 is to get in exercise, movement and toning at every opportunity. I'm a huge fan of working out while you write. I have a fitness ball I hit several times everyday, a few minutes here and there, plus other strategic gadgets to incorporate into my day as a freelance writer. Isometrics are always good to. Keep it on your mind and you will be amazed as to what a difference a few mini work outs can do everyday. After awhile you find yourself doing it by habit. I never set still even when I'm setting still... :)

Great motivational page Katie! I am trying very hard now to lose and tone. Having my 4th child after the age of 40 is what did me in. Also working at the computer all day is not helping, but I am getting better and actually losing weight this summer. I am only 5'5" and I believe it takes a lot more effort at my age to lose it. I was as skinny as a toothpick until I turned 30. (Maybe a good article for you to write..!) This one is excellent.
