HTC One vs Samsung Galaxy S4

A mobile phone comparison of the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4

It isn't always easy to choose a smartphone so here we take a look at two of the newest mobile phones that will be incredibly popular in 2013.

Samsung continues with its popular line of Galaxy phones with the S4, which boasts a 13 megapixels camera whilst HTC offers the HTC One with a new type of camera called a UltraPixel camera.

The Basics

Here we take a quick look at the basic specifications of the One and the Galaxy S4 as we compare mobiles.

Samsung Galaxy S4 - Screen 5" / memory 16/32/64GB / dimensions 136x69x7.9mm (130g) / OS Android v4.2.2

HTC One - Screen 4.7" / memory 32/64GB / dimensions 137x68x9.3mm (143g) / OS Android v4.2.2

Overall we can see that the initial specs are fairly even so let’s move on a take a look at where the two smartphones differ.

Cameras

Samsung has continued in the pixel race and offers a 13 megapixels camera. It is worth considering here though that you can’t display that many pixels on a mobile phone display, images take up an awful lot of memory and there is a risk that images will look grainy.

HTC has proposed a new option with its UltraPixel camera. This camera has less pixels but the key is the new sensor that allows in 300% more light with a result of a brilliant image. The HTC One also has over 100 new camera related features.

Both devices can capture multiple images in one click for selection of the best result and also have the option to remove unwanted objects or people from the image.

The HTC One can record video at the same time as taking pictures whilst the Galaxy S4 can record sound with its pictures and use the secondary camera to put the user in the image or video call.

Sound

Next we compare mobiles in the sound division. The HTC One has BoomSound and this makes full use of stereo dual forward facing speakers. Because the speakers are on the front the sound doesn't get muffled when the mobile phone is put down and the sound doesn't distort even on the highest volume.

The Samsung S4 has Group Play. This strange feature will allow multiple Galaxy S4 phones to play the same music track together increasing overall volume. This would be a great feature if your friends all buy Galaxy S4’s but how likely is that?

How many of your friends have the same phone as you?

Conclusion

As the remaining features are very similar we can probably make a judgement here and we have to go for the HTC One. The sound features are more practical on the HTC One and the UltraPixel camera is fantastic and the images only take up a fraction of the memory compared to the Galaxy S4.

Would you go for the HTC One and is this device going to take HTC back to the top of the tree?
