T Touch for Your Animals and You Too

by Ragtimelil

My experience with the technique called the Tellington Touch© is that it works. It's simple enough for any animal owner to learn.

I have used the technique called the Tellington Touch or TTouch© on a horse, my dogs and myself. It’s a technique developed by Linda Tellington-Jones, for all animals, including humans. I’m not an expert, I couldn’t explain why it works, but in my experience, it does.

My First Introduction

Some years ago, a neighbor of mine bought a horse who was extremely head shy. If you tried, however gently, to brush around his ears, he would fling himself backwards in a panic, snapping the lead line and creating chaos.

About the same time, I happened to have watched a video of Linda Tellington-Jones’s work with horses and was mesmerized. Here was a method that taught the animal to trust humans, rather than to submit out of fear. I asked if I could work with the horse and got the go ahead.

I stated at his shoulder, making little circles and slowly worked my way up to his head. In a matter of minutes, his head hung down to my knees while I massaged his ears. One session was all I got with him, but it showed me the potential of the TTouch.

TTouch on Myself

I forgot about the TTouch for several years until I ran across some books about it. I was having trouble sleeping at night because of pain in my lower back and hips. Pain remedies helped, but weren’t doing anything to make the pain go away. I tried some TTouch on myself. I knew how much pressure to use because it felt good. In a few days, the pain was completely gone, and so far, has not returned.

Massage on Dogs

My 10-year-old Border collie is having some problem with one rear leg. It’s not the typical symptom of bad hips, but more like a knee problem. When I do TTouch on him he seems to feel better. I think it probably won’t cure him at his age, but if he feels better, it’s worth a few minutes of my time.

The Basic Touch

There are dozens of different moves, associated with TTouch, but here’s a basic one to get you started. Any pet owner can learn these simple techniques. First, you have to be mindful of the pressure.  Massage gently so that it just moves the skin. Make a circle, about the size of a quarter with your finger. Start at 6:00 o’clock and make a circle 1 ¼ around. Move to a new spot and repeat. That’s it! A 10 minute session once a day can work wonders.

Sounds wonderful, Ragtimelil! I'll let my cat know about it, too.
