Would you like to play other medieval combat games like Mount and Blade? Like many gamers I was captivated by the realistic combat that the game offered and I've been looking for something that offers a similar experience for a long time.

In recent years this is a genre that has received some new life with a bunch of fun games that use realistic melee combat with medieval style themes. After playing a bunch of them I've selected the few that I consider to be the best.

Please keep in mind that the games like Mount and Blade here don't have the strategy elements of the original game and focus solely on options that have similar combat.

If you like the list that I've put together then be sure to post a comment at the end of this page.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

One Of My Favourite Medieval Combat Games Like Mount and Blade

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is definitely the most enjoyable of the medieval combat games like Mount and Blade that I have tried. it really captures the feel of what I would imagine medieval combat would have been like (brutality and all). At the heart of it's success I believe is the vast number of game modes that offer some great PvP engagements with small skirmishes to more wide scale battles (such as attacking castles or attempting to raid a village).

I also really enjoy the emphasis on skill that the game has, it's really a game where you're battle decisions and extra quick responses can give you an edge in any engagement. Whether it be swords, maces, axes or bows that you want to use their is a solution for everyone's tastes.

For the amount of content you've got the price tag is at a good place to, I definitely felt like it was money well spent. Between customising your character and class to the actual fighting I got a healthy hundred or so hours before I moved on and more hardcore fans of Mount and Blade will likely get much more.

If you aren't sold on the idea the game did start out as a mod for Half-Life under the name of Age of Chivalry which you can investigate to give you some idea of the gameplay.

War of the Roses

Another Great Game With A Focus On Medieval Combat

Another one of the great medieval games like Mount and Blade that I've enjoyed has been War of the Roses an action packed game that focuses on providing vast customisation so that you create your own methods to staying alive in this harsh game world. It also includes combat on mounts which is extremely fun and always feels satisfying as you trample over an enemy.

If you want to wield a huge two handed sword, run around bushing people with a shield or shoot arrows from afar there is room for you to create a character that can achieve that in War of the Roses. While your early few hours in the game are fairly structured as to your options you'll quickly unlock a wealth of options to fill up your custom character slots.

The game thrives on the team deathmatch game mode and it's very precise hit boxes that challenge you to dodge attacks and be careful in choosing the direction of your attacks. Respawns are quick so it's a fast paced offering while still keeping a sense of strategy with every little skirmish that you have.

Since the games success it's expanded into War of the Vikings which as of this post is still in Early Access, it's still got a little way to go but even in it's current state it's a great experience that captures the same combat but introduces a different setting.

Pirates, Vikings and Knights II

A Free Option For Medieval Combat

Pirates, Vikings and Knights II is a semi-free option if you want a Medieval combat game. I say semi free because if you already own a game using the Source engine then it's free since it's a mod. Since I had one of the games on the list I was looking enough to be able to get it for free and it was one of the first games like Mount and Blade that I tried to play when I started my hunt for games.

The name probably gives away what the focus of the game is and follows the combat between three different factions. It's unique on that principle alone, there are very few games that actually use 3 different teams in a combat environment, with many games focusing on one team versus another.

Each of these factions are very unique with their overall style and approach to combat but are actually really well balanced, much better than what I expected for sure. While some ranged options are available the games focus is definitely on the melee confrontations with all sorts of different swings and blocks available to the player.

Pirates, Vikings and Knights II is very much a fun experience and I'm only putting it last on my list because it's still got some development left, these updates happen extremely regularly though, it has a great team behind it.
