Mother’s Day Gifts for Writers

by Mira

By Mira at Wizzley. Some gift ideas for your writer mother on Mother’s Day, including some less common custom-made gifts, wrapping paper, and custom stamps.

If your mother is writing as a hobby or makes a living out of it, and you don’t know what presents to get her on Mother’s Day to celebrate her passion, I have a few gift suggestions. They include more common items such as books, jewelry, perfume, photo cameras etc. (flowers, writing instruments . . .) and, of course, greeting cards, as well as some custom-made gifts that you may not have considered, and which are geared towards the writer in your life. Zazzle, one of the largest print-on-demand companies, has a whole range of such custom products, all sporting statements about writers and writing. They include usual suspects such as mugs, T-shirts, and mousepads, as well as some less familiar types of print-on-demand gifts which make for some more or less unique ideas for Mother’s Day: custom teapots, pillows, tiles, stickers – little things writers usually enjoy so much. To make your gift super special, you can wrap it up in unique wrapping paper sporting designs by great artists or design studios, and complete the statement with a custom stamp expressing your love.

Hallmark Greeting Cards for Mother's Day

First things first. We’ll start with greeting cards, as no gift is complete without them. I picked a Hallmark card, designed by Hallmark and made by Zazzle on their behalf. It reads, “Mom, there’s nothing we’d love better than for you to have a really happy Mother’s Day.” The design is whimsical, with drawings of flowers and a cheery sun. If you can’t be at your mother’s side on Mother’s Day, then give her a series of presents accompanied by such a card to show her how much you care. This card is also a nice choice in that the statement is made in the plural – perfect for a message for your mother coming from your whole family. If you want to really personalize the message, then you can choose a card that simply says Mom on the front.

Writers give shape to questions so you can find some (other) answers.

Here's a less conspicuous design with a quote about writers: “Writers give shape to questions so you can find some (other) answers.” It celebrates writers and artists, who enrich our lives in such an important way. Books and films throw not so much answers as questions at us, making us reflect on many things that would otherwise stay off our radar. It also makes us appreciate the many good things we have in our lives, see them for what they are when we’re taking them for granted.

The Gift of a Writer’s Custom Coffee Mug

There are many designs on Zazzle aimed at writers. One of my favorites is “Don’t forget to write.” If your Mom is a busy person and not making a living by staying put at the computer all day, you can use this mug to encourage her to spend more time writing, particularly if you feel she’s really good at it. She will appreciate the message. It’s also a nice statement if you know she feels you’re not in touch enough: you’re returning the message in a way, reinterpreting it. She’ll enjoy it.

Another design I really like has the statement “To write or not to write. Is that a trick question?” If your mother feels compelled to write and is always typing away at her computer, then she will appreciate your mug and the fact that you understand that for her writing is a way of life – the only way of life she can be happy with.

Custom T-Shirts for Writers

If for your writer Mom writing is a badge of honor, she might appreciate a T-shirt that simply states just that, using one word that says it all: “Writer.” You can, of course, choose the color and style of the tee on Zazzle.

Writer’s Mousepads

If your mother enjoys buying and holding on to books, and if you share her love of books you can call your own, you two appreciate the following quote from Cicero: “A house without books is like a body without a soul.”

If she’s into Kindle or another ereader, then a better choice along the same lines but more inclusive with respect to paper books and ebooks would be a mousepad that reads “Wear the old coat and buy the new book.”

Kindle Paperwhite

Speaking of which, if she would like an ereader but hasn’t bought one yet, you could get it for her as a gift for Mother’s Day. My favorite one is the Kindle Paperwhite, which is currently the #1 Best Seller in all Electronics on Amazon! It has superb features. It has built-in light, great resolution and contrast, and no glare in bright sunlight. Everyone, from ereader enthusiasts to die-hard fans of ebooks will be very excited to receive and play with such a gift! So if you have the money, now is the moment to make your mother happy.

Mother’s Day is a great opportunity to surprise her, especially as you won’t be there to celebrate the day with her, as you are on other occasions. So do surprise her and make her really happy.

The Gift of Books

If you want to give her a book, she might enjoy reading something by one of the greatest female novelists writing today. Of course, she might also enjoy something written by a man. Your pick. I just feel that Mother’s Day should be a day to honor women. Your mother surely has certain favorite writers writing in certain genres. If you know who they are, get her the latest book by several of them. If you don’t know who they are, think of the kind of writing she writes and try getting her a book in that genre. If you’re still at a loss, I recommend a great book I discovered this spring, by a wonderful American female novelist, Siri Hustvedt, called The Summer Without Men.

If she likes writing as well as art, then you can't go wrong with a book like Seek My Face, by John Updike.

Jewelry and Perfume

Jewelry and perfume are even trickier than books, and that extends not only to the choice of perfume, but also to the choice of buying it in a department store or online. Several people are complaining on Amazon that what they bought online from this company is not the real thing in that it won’t last. So maybe it’s wiser to go to an actual shop, although I expect the merchandise you buy there and the perfumes you get on Amazon come from the same distributors.

Same thing for jewelry. You could get it online, but, unless you find some great deals on Amazon (and you will find a number of those), it might be a good idea to buy jewelry at a local jewelry store.

The Gift of a Photo Camera

What you can easily get online without worrying about anything related to the product is a photo camera. I have recently bought a Canon PowerShot S110. It has 12.1MP and a 5x optical zoom with a 24mm-120mm (wide-angle) lens. It has the ability to shoot RAW and you can choose various aspect ratios as well: 16:9, 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, and 4:5. It also shoots Full HD video. All these amazing features are packed into a small body that you can easily carry around in a small women’s purse. With this camera, if your mother is not yet a photo enthusiast, she will soon become one.

Still, there’s a drawback. I’m not very happy with the way this camera renders the whites. Other than that though, it's great, offering so much! But as far as whites go I’m much happier with an older camera, released in 2005, namely Canon 350D or Digital Rebel XT. I’m showing below some photos taken with this camera. It’s a DSLR camera that comes with a 18-55mm lens. You may want more zoom – then you can get other lenses. Also, it doesn’t shoot video. But as far as the photos go, they are wonderful. I’ve photographed the occasional wedding with this camera and got the wedding dresses in wonderful whites. Same with white flowers. See below some photos of beanstalk leaves and flowers taken last summer with my Canon Digital Rebel XT (well, actually my model says 350D).

The Gift of a Teapot and a Pillow

Finally, another small gift your writer mother might like. If she likes tea, that is. It’s a custom teapot with a quote from Flaubert: “The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe.”

Writers enjoy lying down with a good book after they have done their work for the day, so if your mother is a writer, she will enjoy a pillow reading “Oh, for a book and a shady nook,” which I’m reading on Zazzle is a quote from a poem by one of several writers called John Wilson. The longer quote goes like this:

“Oh for a book and a shady nook,
Either indoors or out,
with the green leaves whispering overhead,
or the street cries all about.
Where I may read at all my ease
both of the new and old,
For a jolly good book whereon to look
is better to me than gold”

Writer’s Bumper Sticker

It’s a fact universally acknowledged that writers are bound to use pretty much everything in their writing, in one form or another. In the words on the bumper sticker below, “Careful, or you’ll end up in my novel.” If you don’t want to get your mother a bumper sticker but you like the statement, you can get her a mug with the same words. It would be a nice accessory on her desk as she meets with people at her house ;-).

Nice Wrapping Paper and Custom Stamps

After you decide what to get your mother for her special day and easily order the various gifts online, all you still need to get to make your present is wrapping paper and a custom stamp.

Amazon sells some really beautiful giftwrap paper made by Dover. And it’s not even expensive. The one shown below, with Tiffany stained glass designs costs a little over $4.

As for stamps, there are several designs on Zazzle that are custom-made for Mother’s Day. I’m showing one of them below. A stamp like that should nicely complete the whole offering of love. You will get a sheet of 20 if you order this design from Zazzle, and you can use many of them on your package for a whimsical touch.

These are all great ideas, for Mother's Day or a birthday present or even for Christmas.

:) That's funny: only the names have been changed. A lot of the times it's true!!

Hmm. Some of these gifts for writers would also make great rewards for NanoWrimo. I'm always looking for that little extra motivation to cross the finish line. I love the careful or you'll end up in my novel! It's very true, that. Only the names have been changed to protect the non-innocent...
