Review of Ore-Ida Bold & Crispy Garlic & Black Pepper Steakhouse Fries

by StevenHelmer

I purchased these fries to go with our barbecue lunch. Read to find out what I thought of them.

Product Description: Frozen steakhouse fries from the Ore-Ida brand seasoned with garlic and black pepper. I purchased a bag of these fries for $2.50 this past weekend and prepared them, using our toaster oven, as a side dish to go with the bratwurst and hot dogs I was grilling for lunch and dinner.

Review

We had some nice weather on Saturday and, wanting to take advantage of that, I decided to grill some bratwurst and hot dogs for lunch (and have the leftovers for dinner later that day). I had to stop at the grocery store for the bratwurst and, since I was there anyway, decided to go to the freezer section in search of something to go with the meat. After some consideration, I decided to try the Ore-Ida Bold & Crispy Garlic & Black Pepper Steakhouse Fries.

This was the first time I had seen this product at the store (or, at very least, the first time I noticed it) and thought the "bold & crispy" promise on the bag would make the fries a good complement to the food I was grilling. After trying the fries, however, my opinion of them was somewhat mixed.

Since I was busy outside, my wife ended up preparing these fries in our toaster oven. And, as far as that goes, I was happy with the results. The fries came out of the oven relatively crisp (especially when compared to many other brands we've purchased) and didn't take overly long to make.

I also found I liked the quantity inside the bag. Usually, I'll purchase something like this and am lucky if there are enough fries to last us one meal. There were enough fries in the bag I purchased for two meals, adding a little more value.

My biggest problem with these fries was the flavor. They weren't bad. In fact, I did like them better than many other fries I've purchased. But, there also wasn't anything about them that I would describe as "bold."

I made this purchase fully expecting to taste a lot of pepper and garlic on them, to the point I was concerned my daughters wouldn't like them. However, the pepper/garlic taste from these fries was somewhat underwhelming, especially given the description on the bag and, while I didn't hate them, I did feel a little misled.

Final Opinion

The part about these fries being bold-tasting is very misleading. However, they did come out crispy and, overall, I did like the taste of them. So, even though the bag was misleading, I would still recommend them.

StevenHelmer, Fresh black and white pepper are hard to beat even though it's disappointing not to find them as advertised on frozen food bags.
