I usually only order a few types of products from Schwan's. Ice cream, sherbet, smoothies, vegetables and sometimes pizza. I don't eat processed food so I stay away from their prepared meals like shrimp scampi, chicken pot pie, macaroni and cheese and lasagne, just to name a few. Foods like that are preserved with copious amounts of sodium, I prefer to make meals from scratch. With my eating habits as they are, I rarely read the list of ingredients on anything. I don't buy foods that have a list of ingredients.

The Product
I decided to order Schwan's USDA Choice Beef Sirloin Steaks. The price is reasonable for four 6 ounce steaks, 1 ½” thick. The steaks are raw, individually wrapped and frozen. Before placing my order I did not read the ingredient label available on the website. I'm not in the habit of reading labels, I didn't even think of it. It's raw meat after all.
My Opinion
The steaks were delivered and I wanted to broil one right away. I cut open the plastic wrapper and immediately smelled salt. It was a strong smell. Why? I wondered. It's raw meat after all. That's when I read the ingredient label:
- Beef
- Water
- Salt
- Sodium Phosphate
Then I looked at the nutrition label only to find:
- Sodium 480 mg per steak.
That explains the strong smell of salt.
The steaks were tender so if you're not averse to consuming unnecessarily large amounts of sodium, you might like these.
I will not ever again order raw steaks from Schwan's. Chances are I won't be ordering pork chops either.

DerdriuMarriner. I bought frozen corn, that has zero sodium. Maple Nut Ice Cream 65 mg sodium per 1/2 cup. I never expected raw meat to be preserved with 480 mg sodium. I don't buy frozen dinners, canned or processed food, that's why the smell of sodium was so apparent to me.
candy47, A strong meat smell, even from salt preservatives, can be so awful even though it's nice that the quality otherwise was fine. Labels are something that I try to read, and it always catches me up the few times I don't. What are the ice creams, sherbets, smoothies and vegetables like?
Susan, this was the first time I ordered steaks, but I never will again. The local supermarket steaks are just fine. I will continue ordering my usual items from Schwan's.
I've been a Schwan's customer for years, but I've hardly ever bought meat (except for their pre-cooked bacon), mostly because we have a good source of meat locally that does not add a salt solution. I'm pretty sure they would refund your money if you ask since you were so dissatisfied. I do read labels, but sometimes something slips past me. Bet that won't happen to you again!
