Shoe Racks and Benches - Affordable Home Storage Solution

by Digby_Adams

Keep your shoes organized and maximize your space with these shoe benches and racks

If you love the look of a neat house, then it's necessary to keep shoes, boots, sneakers and slippers picked up. But boy can this be a hard task to accomplish. I've found that it was necessary to think about how my husband and I wear shoes and what we do with them when we go from the outside to inside the house. The first thing I had to deal with was what happens to our boots and garden shoes. Those are the dirtiest and most cumbersome. We decided to put a shoe bench in our kitchen by our back door. This spot is for garden shoes in the summer and boots and shoes in the winter.

It's amazing how much more picked up the house looks with just this one change. We have quickly gotten into the habit of sitting down on the bench and taking off our work boots and putting on a pair of clean and comfortable slippers. We have a large country kitchen and the shoe bench looks quite nice.

We also quickly learned that out of the many pairs of shoes and sneakers we have, there are just a few that we wear on a regular basis. The storage for these has to be out in the open and very close to wear we get dressed and undressed. If not, the result is we don't use our shoe racks.

So we got a small two-tier shoe rack that fits just outside the bathroom door that adjoins our bedroom. So at night when we wash up, that's where our shoes go. At least there's a 90% chance that the shoes we have one go there.

That's where most people go wrong with home storage solutions. They make them inconvenient. In order for them to work, you have to change your ways. I've learned that my husband and I like to be comfortable and we aren't going to change. So we have to make our life fit us.

Every woman knows that we have more shoes than we need. But sometimes you just can't resist a sale or a special style. So we end up with lots of shoes that we don't wear very often. I have put large shoe racks in our walk-in closet for these rarely used used. Hey even my husband has several pairs of these as well. It's nice to have them in the closet. That way we can compare them to the fancy outfits we are considering wearing.

My brothers and sisters have just started having kids. It's amazing how many adorable little pairs of shoes a baby can have before they even start walking! To keep the shoes in order and from going missing, they've started using over the door shoe racks. These often have pockets and it's easy to put the little baby shoes or toddler shoes in one.

I can not seem to get a grip on what to do with all our shoes. We have 4 children and coats and shoes seem to pile up at the door. I have baskets to put them in but it just doesn't work. I may need to take a look at one of these shoe racks and try to get rid of my shoe issue. Thanks for a very useful article.

I lived in China for 8+ years. You know, they don't wear shoes inside. Most every home is equipped with a special shoe cabinet by the front door. You can store both street shoes and slippers. I loved that custom and really miss it here. Now we seem to trip over our shoes all over the house. I could use some of these shoe racks.

This is on my todo list for the New Year - tidy up those shoes! Those over the door solutions look good as we've run out of space for a shoe rack.
