When my oldest daughter turned 8 months old she started pulling herself up and grabbing things off our coffee table. Then when she turned 10 months she started walking and of course falling. A few times she hit her head on one of the living room end tables. Long story short, a few years later when we moved to our new house we decided not to replace our "dangerous" tables and just go without for the safety of our children (we now had two girls). That was 11 years ago. We have not had tables in our living room for a very long time.
Today, my daughter is now 15, her younger sister 12 and her brother is 8. None of them grab things off tables anymore, but my son loves to play ball and run around so we are still not ready to purchase a full sized coffee table and end table set. Plus when you go without for so long you tend to get used to the space and don't really want to give it up for a table.
The problem is like most men my husband had his favorite chair (see photo above), but did not have a table for his drink, cellphone, remote control and glasses. So everything ended up on the sofa or on the floor next to the sofa. Drink glasses on the floor are an accident waiting to happen. I can't tell you how many times I had to yell "Watch the glass!" And eye glasses on the couch are a problem when someone goes to sit down and doesn't see them.
Therefore, I decided to buy my husband a small table for his birthday and after doing some research purchased the Sofa Mate table pictured here. He loves his present and it works perfectly.
