Over 3 million visitors a year come to England's Lake District to enjoy the wonderful scenery loved by Wordsworth and the Romantic poets. Take a look and see why .
The Lakes in the Lake District are wonderful
The main attraction of the Lake District- the Lakes!
Just because it's obvious it doesn't mean it's wrong! The best thing about the Lake District is the variety of Lakes, each with it's own character, in a very small gepgraphical area.
The lakes of the Lake district vary in size and atmosphere. There are 16 or 17 main lakes, and lots of small pieces of water known as "tarns" I've chosen as my top 10 lakes ( in no particular order) Windermere, Grasmere, Rydal Water, Ullswater, Bassenthwaite, Thirlmere, Derwentwater, Coniston, Wastwater and Buttermere.
Windermere is the busiest lake, with hundreds of boats from large passenger boats to tiny canoes.Windermere is the most southerly lake, making it the easiest for most visitors to reach.
Wastewater on the other hand is less accessible. With screes all along one side, Wastwater is quiet, majestic and menacing.
Rydal Water is very pretty with lovely walks.
Grasmere inspired the poet William Wordsworth. All the Lake District Lakes are beautiful, and have been painted by artists including Turner and Constable in the past and by many modern artists. The Lake District lakes are also the subject of thousands of photographs. Take a look through the links below to see why for yourself.

Why I love England's Lake District
I live in a house owned by William Wordsworth in the heart of the Lake District.
My house, White Moss House, was once owned by the poet, William Wordsworth, who bought it for his son, also William ( known as Willie) The poet wanted his son to settle down, and bought this house ( White Moss House) for the family. William Worsdworth at this time had become very famous, and lived at nearby Rydal Mount. Many people visit the Lake District National Park for cultural reasons. As well as being home to William Wordsworth, the Lake District was home to the poets Coeridge and Southey, Beatrix Potter, the author of Peter Rabbit, and John Ruskin, the philosopher, educator, patron of the arts and outstanding 19th century personality. There are many literary festivals and events throughout the year.
The Lake District has attracted writers, poets, and artists for centuries.Nowadays the Lake District is also famous as a centre for outdoor activities. Many of these activities centre on the Lakes themselves. There is every sort of water based activity, except for speed boats- these have been banned from the Lakes to ensure peace and quiet for other lake users.
The other major outdoor activitiy is walking, hiking and climbing the Lake District hills, known as "fells". I try to get out for a walk in this fantastic scenery every day. There are fell races, running meets, cycling events and many organised outdoor activities in the Lake District National Park.
The Lake District villages are quaint and fascinating. The Lake District has great accommodation, pubs and restaurants.
The Lake District can be visited at all tmes of year, and looks wonderful whatever the weather.
I love the Lakes!
