One of the best fashion trends in the last few years has been for brides to use vintage wedding apparel for their wedding dress, veil, and shoes.

One of the most interesting trends in the wedding industry in the last few years, has been the introduction of vintage and antique additions to most phases of the wedding. The biggest addition has been the inclusion of vintage and antique wedding gowns, veils, and wedding hats as the bridal wardrobe.

It has long been a tradition of brides to wear the family heirloom wedding dress in their wedding, possibly the wedding dress of their mother or grandmother, or another close relative. However, if a bride did not have a dress in their family, most brides would then go out and buy a brand new wedding gown to be married in.

This trend has not gone away, but increasingly, for many reasons, brides are turning to vintage wedding apparel to fill their needs for a beautiful, unique wedding gown for their special day.

What Has Caused This Change in Bridal Apparel

There are several reasons that brides are turning to vintage apparel for their wedding outfits.

  • One reason is that vintage apparel has become more and more popular over the last few years.  Some brides will search for the perfect vintage wedding gown, while others will find a suitable gown, then alter it to their design specifications.
  • Another reason is that many brides can save a lot of money buying a vintage gown.
  • Thirdly, using a vintage wedding dress is eco-friendly.  Why buy new, when you can find an equally beautiful dress that has only been worn once or twice, and save the earth's resources.
  • A fourth reason is that styles available when vintage dresses were made, and some materials are no longer available now.

Whatever the reason, the fact remains that vintage wedding apparel is a trend that is not going away.

Where to Find Vintage Wedding Apparel

There are several places to search

One of the most exciting parts of using vintage apparel for your wedding is the hunt for the perfect wedding dress.  This hunt is not new to brides, who have been hunting for the perfect wedding dress for decades, but the vintage hunters are already good at hunting for the perfect outfit, so they only need to step up their game to find the wedding dress of their dreams.

If you are new to looking for vintage apparel, then here are a few tips:

  • Search your friends' and relatives' closets first.  You may be surprised at what you can find there.
  • Look for knowledgeable vintage stores in your local area.  They can help you narrow down what you are looking for.
  • Ebay is a great place to find vintage.  There are many reputable sellers to help you with your vintage hunt.

Other Vintage Wedding Items to Consider

Besides your wedding gown, shoes, veil or hat, there are many other items that you can buy vintage for style alone, or to save yourself money.

You can buy vintage glass bottles or vases for the centerpieces, vintage apparel for the bridesmaids and groomsmen, and a simply gorgeous antique or vintage wedding/engagement ring.  Jewelry does not go out of style, or spoil with age, it only gets better.

Know Your Vintage Hunting Vocabulary

When searching for vintage items for a wedding, or any other purpose, it is important to know your vintage hunting vocabulary.

The condition an item is in is quite important.  "Mint" condition means that an item is in perfectly new condition.

To determine the authenticity of a vintage or antique item, you can ask for proof of authenticity or an appraisal by an authorized appraiser.

Sellers of vintage and antique items normally show pictures of the item from all sides, especially if the item is expensive or unique.  If they don't, ask for those pictures.  Most sellers are reputable, but it pays to be careful.

Trust your own judgement.  If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Good info. I love just about anything antique, so if you must get married, why not search for an antique dress.

At my age, I couldn't help but have a vintage wedding - a real old vintage wedding, that is.

That is a lovely idea, Bev.

Another trend I have seen for weddings is the Bride choosing vintage brooches for her bridesmaids to wear and then keep as a gift from her. Some will wear them as a traditional brooch and others place them on the sash or belt of the dress.
