What Is Vitamin E?
Vitamin E is a generic name for tocopherols – a group of related compounds which occur in four major forms:

Vitamin E is fat-soluble. Unlike other fat-soluble vitamins, tocopherols do not accumulate to toxic levels in the body.
Vitamin E is stored for relatively long periods in the body, mainly in fatty tissue and the liver. It is excreted in the stools. It is found in relatively few foods, many of which are high in fat.
This makes it difficult to obtain the right levels of vitamin E, if on a low-fat diet. Supplements are therefore very useful in obtaining optimal amounts of vitamin E.

How To Take Vitamin E.
- To benefit from the disease-fighting potential, 250mg to 500mg a day (including that within multivitamins), in capsule or tablet form.
- Doses up to 800mg a day, if there is a high risk of heart disease and certain cancers.
- May be particularly effective if taken with vitamin C.
Vitamin E should be taken at the same time every day, with a meal (in order to decrease stomach irritation). This increases the absorption of this fat-soluble nutrient.
For topical use, break open a capsule and apply to the skin. You may also use a cream containing vitamin E.
Choose natural vitamin E (d-alpha), rather than synthetic (dl-alpha), as the natural form is more effective in crossing the blood-brain barrier.
Some labels give doses in IU (International Units): one IU = 0.67mg.
