Zork Series

A Huge Series Of Games Like Myst

The Zork series really takes me back, starting in 1977. It was one of the early games in the fictional genre and would let you interactive with the games on a whole new scale at the time.

I'm not going to recommend the very early Zork games here (text based adventures) and instead I'm going to suggest that you try Return To Zork, Zork Nemesis and Zork Grand Inquisitor. These three options are the more newer games in the Zork series being released in 1993, 1996 and 1997 respectively.

Return To Zork is definitely where you want to start your adventure in this game as it was the first to introduce graphics to the entire franchise. This system is very reminiscent of Myst which came out a few months later.

This Myst like interface combines with multiple endings and paths throughout the story that do encourage you to play through the games more than once, a feature that I really consider a must in the genre. The fact that a game from 1993 managed to achieve this it really puts more modern games to shame.

The Journeyman Series

Another Series Of Games Like Riven

The Journeyman Project takes the best aspects of adventure games like Riven and turns them towards a more science fiction setting. The series started in 1992 and evolved through time (literally) to deliver a great series of games.

The story for the games centre around the ability to travel through time and combine these themes with aliens and plenty of human conspiracy theories to make a very engaging experience.

Gameplay is a first person experience as you control Agent 5 and all the messes that he finds himself in. The interface is definitely clunky by todays standards but this large UI meant the actual game screen was small enough to provide a decent frame rate in the older days of gaming.

As a puzzle adventure the obvious focus is on collecting clues and using them to solve some very strange puzzles. if you love the classic style of games like Myst and you haven't played The Journeyman series, you're missing out on one of the best in the genre.

RHEM Series

Another Favourite Series Of Games Like Myst

RHEM is a a series of games that definitely are worthy of the "Myst Clone" title and draw heavily from the popular game of the day. This means you'll find a great mixture of exploration and puzzles with a huge array of environments in between.

The series of has four games under its belt; RHEM, RHEM 2: The Cave, RHEM 3: The Secret Library and RHEM 4: The Golden Fragments. Personally the third game really stood out as the best option and introduced a huge number of changes that stepped up the entire experience. The games are linked so playing in order is recommended but it isn't a series of games that requires it.

Your goals in the games vary but generally involve finding a particular item or artefact after a long line of puzzles. It's always an enjoyable adventure to reach that point as well.
