Haunted Battlefields: The Ghosts of Killiecrankie
I stayed at Red Squirrel campsite, which is a pleasant little place by the river. What strikes me, though, is that by highland standards the massacre of Glencoe was nothing out of the ordinary. It was the treachery that made it unacceptable. ...

The Birth of Edward VI: Joy Surrounded in Misery
I keep coming across 'childbed fever' in histories and it's never occurred to me to actually work out what that would be today. Do you have any idea? Nice telling of the birth of Edward VI. :) Random fact of the day to go with it: there ...

Communism Deluxe Tour of Nowa Huta in Krakow
*slaps head* I really should have remembered that, shouldn't I? In my defence, I'd only just woken up when I replied to you before, and my mind was full of the Krakow Ghetto. I transferred all available (first cuppa) mental capacity to the ...

Communism Deluxe Tour of Nowa Huta in Krakow
The Poles never forgot that the Soviets hadn't helped them during the Warsaw Uprising. They'd waited on the other side of the river and didn't intervene. The way our guide told it, the Soviets wanted to be the great liberators all by ...

Shonna - Ooh! Would she be willing to talk about it now? If you asked her, now that you're older?

Haunted Battlefields: The Ghosts of Killiecrankie
Frank - I was just a mile or so away, down the river, from the village. I walked up there to stand at the memorial, then wandered around to the loch and back. It was incredibly beautiful but, like you, I felt nothing actually preternatural.

sflm - It's funny you should say that. Did you notice that no doors open onto the Avenue of Roses? This was indicative and quite deliberate. All front doors opened into central areas, which were accessed by a single archway apiece. A ...
