So if you've got a spare $2,000 and you're worried how you'll look in that next viral Youtube video, you might want to consider chin implants (mentoplasty). But make your reservations early or you might waiting in line. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons their members performed 20,680 chin implants with an average cost of about $1,821 last year. While this is the largest increase tracked from 2010 to 2011 for any cosmetic surgery procedure, it's really a drop in the bucket of the world of plastic surgery. In 2011 consumers spent $10.4 billion on cosmetic procedures, up 2.95% from 2010. People living in the Mountain/Pacific region of the United States had the most procedures totaling 3.9 million.
Chin Implants - Cost and Popularity
The total number of chin implants or mentoplasty increased 71% to a total of 20,680 in 2011 and cost about $1,821.
Getting a chin implant is done on an outpatient basis and only takes an hour. Who can benefit from a mentoplasty? Well, obviously folks that have a weak chin or just need a bit of enhancement. (If you're wondering which person has a perfect chin, well just picture George Clooney.). Chin augmentation can also provide a younger appearance. As Nora Ephron lamented in the title of her recent book on aging, I Feel Bad About My Neck, the chin and neck area is one of the first to show it's signs of age. It's not uncommon to combine a chin implant with liposuction. This combination can take 7 to 10 years off of your looks.
Chin enhancement really does balance the top and bottom of the face. Watch the YouTube video to the right and you'll what a difference a strong chin can make. Whether your older with an aging face or younger with a naturally weak chin.

How Long Does It Take To Recover from Getting a Chin Implant?
You can generally plan on a five to seven day recovery period. During the first week some bruising and swelling is pretty common. By 10 days most people will be what plastic surgeons refer to as restaurant ready. That means that you can go out and about and your appearance won't draw any unwanted attention to you. At two months, you should see your new face in all of its perfection.
How a Mentoplasty is Performed
A small incision is made below the chin. The plastic surgeon cuts through skin and muscle all the way to the bone. The porous chin implant is attached directly to the bone. A board certified surgeon is always a good idea, because there are nerves that need to be identified and avoided. I mean you want to keep smiling. right?
This plastic surgeon prefers a two-piece chin implant because he feels that it's easier to get the fit just right. The chin implant is over designed, so that the surgeon can cut and shape it to exactly match the patient. Once the chin implant is in place, a titanium screw is inserted to hold it in place. The plastic surgeon can make further adjustments to the chin implant after the screw is inserted.
The surgeon can thin out the neck after the chin implant is completed by cutting of layers of unwanted fat. This is a different procedure from liposuction.
