Days to Celebrate in March
by lou16
There are a number of different holidays to celebrate in March including Peanut Butter Lovers Day and the much more well known St Patrick's Day.
Celebrating March Holidays
1st March Holidays
1st March - National Pig Day
National Pig Day has been celebrated since 1972 and apparently the official purpose of the holiday is to "accord the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as man's most intellectual and domesticated animals.' I'm not sure about that having never celebrated the holiday myself, but I do wonder if the sisters that started this holiday read George Orwell's Animal Farm.
1st March - Peanut Butter Lovers Day
This holiday is exactly what it says Peanut Butter Lovers Day, you can wear your I heart peanut butter t shirts and eat peanut butter straight out of the jar if you want because this is a day for celebrating this delicious food.........unless you have a peanut allergy that is.
1st March - Share a Smile Day
Now personally I think everyday should be share a smile day as it's amazing what happens when you smile at someone that you're passing on the street - they smile back and sometimes even say hello! It's good to remind ourselves to be positive and think happy thoughts sometimes however and that's what Share a Smile Day was set up to do.
2nd March Holidays
2nd March - Read Across America Day
Read Across America Day is held on 2nd March because it's Dr Seuss' birthday and who didn't learn to read to one of his books? This great holiday is part of an initiative by the National Education Association and gets a big thumbs up from me as reading is so important.
2nd March - Old Stuff Day
Old Stuff Day??? Now it appears that no one has taken credit for this bizarre holiday and when I first heard Old Stuff Day I thought - cool I can break out the old music, maybe even throw an 80s party........but no! Apparently the holiday was started in response to a common answer to the 'whatcha doing?' question - "nothing really, same old stuff." This holiday is supposed to break that and encourage people to try new stuff - should've been called new stuff day, but that's just me nitpicking!
3rd March Holidays
3rd March - National Anthem Day
On March 3rd, 1931 the USA adopted the Star Spangled Banner as it's National Anthem and so we now have a holiday to celebrate that.
3rd March - I Want You To Be Happy Day
This special holiday is a day to remind ourselves to care about others and not be so selfish.
3rd March - Peach Blossom Day
Peach Blossom Day has it's roots in Japanese culture and is celebrated on the day when in Japan the peach trees blossom. I love Peach Blossoms so I think that's a great reason for a holiday, but apparently it's more to do with letting little girls be girls and celebrating them.
4th March - National Poundcake Day
I always love an excuse to eat cake! Did you know that Poundcake has actually been around since the 1700s? No wonder it deserves it's own holiday so to paraphrase Marie Antoinette, "let them eat poundcake".
6th March - National Frozen Food Day
Ronald Reagan introduced National Frozen Food Day in 1984 and here's a picture of him and his wife enjoying some frozen foods.
This image is brought to you from the U.S.National Archives and Records Administration.
Personally I'd recommend eating ice-cream on this day, after all it is a frozen food!
Frozen foods have certainly made life easier for a lot of working families in Western society so it's only fitting that we give them their own special day.
7th March - Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is actually French for Fat Tuesday and was originally a Christian event, but it's now just thought of as a carnival or huge celebration full of parties, parades and fun.
8th March - International Women's Day
Originally this holiday was called the Working Women's Day and was actually a socialist political event to show respect to women for their achievements. It's celebrated differently in different parts of the world, but no matter where you live this is a great opportunity to take time to appreciate the women in your life.
9th March - Panic Day
Before you start to panic and freak out (like the poster opposite) you should know that this holiday isn't about running around panicing it's in fact supposed to be a light hearted holiday that allows us to take time out to de-stress from our busy days.
Personally I think we should all hit the red button and freak out a bit as it's the perfect excuse to let off some steam - what do you think?
10th March Holidays
10th March - Buzzard Day
10th March - Festival of Life in the Cracks Day
11th March - Johnny Appleseed Day
Johnny Appleseed aka John Chapman is such an American hero that he actually has two days named after him. This March Johnny Appleseed Day is supposed to represent the day he died although this date has been disputed. Whatever the reason let's celebrate the day in style and if you don't know who Johnny Appleseed was then check out his life on wikipedia.
12th March - Girl Scout Day
Girl Scout Day recognizes and celebrates the Girl Scouts of the USA and the date is actually used because the first Girl Scout group in the USA was founded on this date in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia.
13th March Holidays
13th March - Good Samaritan Day
13th March - Jewel Day
A holiday for giving and/or recieving jewelry, now that has to be a good day! I must mark this holiday in my hubby's diary as I do love my jewelry!
13th March - National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day
If you are thinking of participating in the National Open An Umbrella Indoors Day which is appropriately also on the 13th of March then I should remind you of the superstition that it brings bad luck and I'll also give you a link (below) to some pretty cool umbrellas because if you're going to court bad luck you might as well do it in style!
Unique Umbrellas
There are some really cool umbrellas which are designed to bring a smile to your face on a wet day from animal prints to flowers, celebrity to artworks if you're after a unique umbrella then this is the place to start!
14th March - National Pi Day
National Pi Day had to be on the 14th March as Pi starts 3.14 or March 14th!
Be sure to learn Pi to as many decimal points as you can and if you have trouble with that you can always get yourself a Pi shirt - the one opposite takes Pi to 15 decimal places!
14th March - National Potato Chip Day
A day to celebrate the humble potato chip sounds like a great idea and I always love an excuse to open a bag of chips, don't you? I think on a national holiday you should take the potato chip to a whole new level - have you heard of chocolate covered potato chips? Go on try one, you are celebrating!

17th March Holidays
17th March - St Patrick's Day
St Partrick's Day is supposed to honor the patron saint of Ireland - St Patrick, but instead it's thought of as a time to party and generally paint the town green! A friend of mine celebrates his Irish roots by having a special St Patrick's Day feast at his mother's house where they enjoy family and lots of traditional Irish dishes and the odd Guinness and Baileys drinks!
We tend to go to a local Irish bar and raise a glass to some of our Irish friends or throw a party for all of our friends with lots of cocktails and laughter.

A great smelling day by all accounts! I missed the memo about fragrance day and brought myself a new perfume in January! I thoroughly recommend Katy Perry's Purr though, the fragrance is divine!

28th March - Something on a Stick Day
Who doesn't like eating food on a stick? Depending on where in the world you live though food on a stick can mean just about anything from a fudgecicle (yum) to a fried cockroach (yuck).
This day is a great way to encourage fussy toddlers to eat a wider range of foods though, telling them that it's 'Something on a Stick Day' can actually work, although it's time consuming to make a banquet of different foods for their dinner - it's amazing how they will eat fruit and veg when on a stick!
30th March - Doctor's Day
Doctor's Day obviously honors doctors, but it also has it's own flower so if you have a favorite doctor why not send them red carnations on National Doctor's Day?
