Death And Grim Reaper Costumes For Halloween

by CeresSchwarz

Looking to dress up as Death for Halloween? The Grim Reaper isn't the only kind of death around. What are the other kinds of death costumes that you can choose to wear?

Death is one of the only constant things in this world. It is something that everyone experiences. Sooner or later, regardless of circumstances, everyone will die and there is nothing that anyone can do to stop this from happening.

While there is something scary about death, at the same time, there is also something strangely fascinating about it as well. After all, who really knows what happens after we die? It is perhaps because of this that many have written about different personifications of death and concepts about the afterlife.

It is also why you can find a lot of death-related or death-themed costumes for Halloween especially since being Death or the Grim Reaper is certainly perfectly apt for the holiday in question. So what are some of the different kinds of death costumes that you can choose to wear for Halloween?

Grim Reaper

The Grim Reaper is the classic personification of Death who is often thought of or portrayed as wearing a black hooded cloak and carrying a scythe much like the costume that you can see to the right.

Some also think the Grim Reaper is some sort of skeletal figure or is made up of skeletons so wearing a mask should help to complete your Death look. Fortunately, the costume to the right does include the skeletal mask.

While wearing this particular costume, you could declare yourself to be Death from the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett especially considering how the aforementioned Death character does look like the typical Grim Reaper.

You could even try acting like the Discworld's Death.

Alternatively, you could go for the scary and frightening version of Death or just make up your very own characterization. While women could also opt for a costume such as the one above, they could instead decide to don outfits such as the one featured below, which certainly adds a more feminine look to Death. After all, who says that Death has to be male all the time?

If you want, you could even decide to dress up as Death of The Endless from The Sandman comic book series by Neil Gaiman. This character is a female anthropomorphic personification of Death who is definitely interesting and very much different from the usual characterizations of Death or the Grim Reaper.

Even this Death's outfit is different from that of the traditional Grim Reaper look though perhaps you could still wear either outfit featured here and then add a silver-colored ankh necklace reminiscent of the one that Death of The Endless wears.

Of course, to complete your Grim Reaper look, you would certainly want to add a scythe as part of your ensemble. For some, Death just wouldn't be the same without this scythe. Fortunately, the costume below does include the scythe however, unfortunately, the costume above does not include the scythe.

Shinigami

The Shinigami can be said to be the Japanese version of the Grim Reaper. Shinigami means "god of death" and it is a personification of death.

There are many Japanese stories that speak of the Shinigami and there is even mentions of it in Japanese religion.

So if you want to be different from those who would be dressing up as the usual or traditional Grim Reaper, you could wear a Shinigami costume instead.

If you are a fan or if you know about the anime Bleach, then you know that there are also Shinigami that appear in this anime and manga series.

In the world of Bleach, the Shinigami are considered as soul guardians and they are tasked to send the souls of the dead to wherever they belong. They have a number of abilities and even a weapon as well as other duties aside from the aforementioned.

One of the Shinigami from Bleach is the character known as Kurosaki Ichigo and you can see his outfit featured above and below. The black-colored Shinigami costumes are pretty much similar however the one below also includes two masks as you can see in the image.

You could get yourself a Shinigami weapon to complete your look or you could go for a scythe to be more like the usual Grim Reaper. The Shinigami costume is still very much reminiscent of death with its dark black color whilst the red-colored parts of it could be akin to blood.

Death Tarot Card

For something completely different and yet still related to death and the concept of death, you could decide to dress up as the Death Tarot Card by donning costumes like the one shown below.

The Death is the thirteenth Major Arcana in a Tarot Card deck, hence the XIII you can see in the image below. The Tarot Card shown below depicts a skeletal Grim Reaper wielding a scythe. There are a number of dead bodies lying on the road beside him. In the far background, in the distance, there is a castle.

This particular costume includes the skeletal mask as well as the skeletal gloves, making it more apparent that, not only are you portraying the Death Tarot Card but also the Grim Reaper.

In fact, this costume could even pass off as a traditional Grim Reaper costume thanks to the black-colored robes, the hood and the skeletal mask and gloves. The Tarot Card just makes you stand out from all the others who opted to dress up as the Grim Reaper for Halloween.

You could get yourself a scythe to complete the look. After all, even the Death in the Tarot Card is carrying a scythe so there's no reason why you can't also carry one especially since you are supposed to be the Death Tarot Card.

Angel of Death / Death Angel

If there are fallen angels and dark angels and angels of darkness, then there are also death angels or angels of death.

Any one of these kinds of angels seem perfectly apt for a Halloween costume especially considering that these angel outfits would no doubt consist of dark colors such as black and maybe even some red to signify blood.

The death angel costume featured to the right does not have any red colors to it but its dark black color is definitely akin to darkness whilst the white colors serve to add some sort of creepy factor to this outfit.

The skeleton shape and the entire look of the costume makes it similar to that of a Grim Reaper outfit. The only difference is the pair of wings that come with this costume.

The wings on the aforementioned costume help to distinguish you from all the Grim Reaper outfits and show that you are an angel of death. Of course, just because you're a death angel doesn't mean that you have to have skeletal figures or don a mostly black-colored outfit. Even angels of death can look elegant and glamorous albeit in a deadly, dark and foreboding way.

The costume featured below shows a perfect example of this. This particular outfit consists of a wonderful combination of the colors black, to remind you of darkness and death, and red, to be reminiscent of blood and perhaps even war. Aside from the cool-looking pair of wings, you also get the headpiece with this costume. If you like, you could even get yourself a scythe to really remind people of Death or the Grim Reaper.

And, while the image featured below shows the model without shoes, it might be a good idea to actually wear a pair of shoes even if the Halloween party's taking place in your house, just to avoid possibly being stepped on. You could wear red-colored shoes to match the color of your costume and so it wouldn't be all that noticeable.

Death God or Goddess

God or Goddess of Death

There are many gods and goddesses of death that appear in various mythologies from all over the world.

For instance, there's the Greek God Hades who is the ruler of the Underworld. There's also Thanatos who is the Greek personification of death.

In Norse Mythology, the Goddess Hel is the ruler of Niflheim, the land of the dead.

In Mesopotamian Mythology, we have the Goddess Ereshkigal as the ruler of the Underworld known as Irkalla.

These are just some of the many gods and goddesses of death that you could choose to dress up as for Halloween.

Death God Costume

With costumes like the ones you can see above and below, you can easily choose whichever death god or goddess you want to be for Halloween and be able to portray him or her with your chosen outfit. Alternatively, you could even make up your very own death god or goddess and dress up as him or her for the holiday in question.

Since we are talking about gods and goddesses of death, the costumes you will be wearing will no doubt contain a lot of black and dark colors to really show the association with death and even the Underworld or hell.

Costumes like the one above can make you look like a death god who is also the ruler of the Underworld realm especially when you get the horned headpiece and even the cape as part of this dark outfit.

The sword is unfortunately not included however, this may be just as well as it would be much more appropriate to carry a death scythe instead. Of course, if you prefer to carry a sword anyway or some other weapon, you could do so as well.

The dark-colored costume below definitely fits the description of a death goddess and the headpiece that comes with this outfit can be perfect for those that want to be rulers of the dead or queens of the Underworld though some might prefer to get a black-colored crown or headpiece instead.

You could also get yourself a sword, scythe or some other weapon to add as props and help to complete your death goddess look.

Conclusion

Any one of these costumes can be good choices if you want to dress up as death or the grim reaper for Halloween.

You could make yourself look scarier by wearing a mask such as that of a skeleton and you could even get yourself a scythe or some other weapon to use as a prop. Of course, if you really want to go the scary route, then it might be best to go with non-human costumes like those that portray monsters and other dangerous creatures.

Alternatively, you could still go for an elegant and beautiful look even as death by being a death angel or a death goddess. And if you feel that death isn't a villain enough for you, perhaps you might want to dress up as a Disney villain instead.
