Over the centuries many artists have depicted their favorite pets in paintings, sculptures and drawings. This article will feature some of this fun art for your home or for gifting

The holidays are not too far off now, why not think of gifting a wonderful piece of art for the dog-lover on your list? There are many examples to choose from, so explore this article and see what tickles your fancy.

Many dogs have been featured in various art forms. One example is the Mastiff breed which is well represented in the art of the last few centuries. Some famous examples include Las Meninas by Diego Velasquez of Spain, and The Children of Charles I by Anthony Van Dyck of England, or Francis Bacon's Man with Dog (1953). H. Hardy Simpson set the standard for dog portraits by depicting a dog in profile, check out his piece titled The Mastiff in profile.

Even the famous American painter Norman Rockwell included dogs in his art, see below for one example.

In recent years there have been many dogs of war who have fought along side our troops in the battlefields. Some of them have been commemorated in art pieces.

The Artist Sir Alfred Munnings

Sir Alfred Munnings was one of England's finest painters of horses but he also loved to paint dogs as well. At a young age he was apprenticed to a Norwich printer. He attended the Norwich School of Art. Later as an artist he chose to paint rural scenes. He often painted horses racing or hunting. He lived from 1878 to 1959. He served as President of the Royal Academy of Art. There is a museum of his work in Nedham, England.

The German/American Painter Named Frederick August Wenderoth

Frederick August Wenderoth lived in the 1800s and moved to America where he lived an adventurous and colorful life.  He was a painter and photographer.  He moved to California during the Gold Rush. He was not successful as a miner but he later established art studios in Sacramento and San Francisco. Much later he returned to Philadelphia, where he established a photography studio. He invented the photographic techniques, of ivory-type and photozincography. His famous Little Terrier on a Table was autioned off at Cowan's, in Cincinnati on October 18, 2008 for $4,700. I adore dogs, I am one of their biggest fans, there is no great relation comparing to that with a dog and their unconditional love. Great dog art
