Dr Seuss Stuffed Animals: My Favorite Characters in Plush

by belinda342

What could possibly make that Dr Seuss bedtime story time even more special? How's about a soft Dr Seuss Plush toy to cuddle with?

I was a late comer to the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss. Don't ask me how I missed him in my very young years, but I did. Luckily I became an Aunt at a fairly young age and my nephew was kind enough to share his love of these books with me. Especially if I would read them to him.

Needless to say, he didn't have to ask me twice. We both loved the way the words rhymed and just the very sound of them as they tripped off the tongue of the reader made us laugh. These were books that were written to be read aloud.

And the wonderful stories weren't ones to be read once and forgotten, either. Over and over we kept coming back to them. They were our very favorite reading session material. At the time we thought them perfect in every way.

But now we have been proven wrong. With the addition of the Dr. Seuss stuffed animal collection, now they are even better.

The Cat in the Hat

The Inaugural Beginner Book

Dr. Seuss had written many children's stories before The Cat in the Hat, but this book was still a first.  It was his first book that was written for very early readers.  A true beginner reader.

His reason for writing it was simple.  He wanted kids to want to read. The early readers of those days were filled with proper children doing proper things...and all in all, they were actually quite boring. He figured (and rightly so) that by giving early readers a book that was fun to read, they would spend more time--well--reading.

And his gambit paid off.  Kids loved this mischievous cat in the red and white striped stovepipe hat.  They loved the words, they loved the stories, but most of all they loved that cat.

At first, Dr. Seuss did not want his characters roaming around outside his books. So children had to get their fix of this character through reading.  Knowing this, he continued writing about the much loved cat. A total of six rhymed books star this character.

Now, you can even find more books featuring him, as the Cat in the Hat now has a whole series of books in what they call the Learning Library. Now kids can learn all kinds of things from a character they have loved from the very beginning!

But the very best part of all, is that the wonderful cat has now stepped out of the pages of books.  That's right. Now he's a stuffed animal too!  What better gift could you possibly give a very young reader than a combination of the book and animal?

Horton the Elephant

(My Personal Favorite!)

I have yet to find a Dr. Seuss book that I didn't fall in love with, but I do have a personal favorite.  Horton Hears a Who.  I absolutely love that story! The very idea of such a tiny little world at the mercy of a much, much larger one...well, that's the kind of story that fuels a child's imagination for life.

And to me Horton is the perfect role model for children too.  Loyal, friendly, and determined, he teaches our children about morals in such a fun way, that kids don't mind at all.  Because I'm not the only one that loves that courageous elephant.  Children love him too.

There are only two books that star my favorite character, Horton, but they are both well worth adding to your child's library.  Just be warned, you are very likely to be reading them time and time again.

(And don't forget to pick up a plush Horton for cuddle time too!)

The Grinch: A Christmas Classic

Most of the Dr. Seuss books can be read and enjoyed all throughout the year, but there is one very notable exception.  That true Christmas classic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Even the mere mention of the title gets me humming that tune..."You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch..." Kids know and love this character from the movie alone.  But if you have never actually read the book, you really should.  This is a classic that deserves an honored place on your bookshelf.

Instead of reading the Night Before Christmas, why not substitute the Grinch instead? Sounds like a fun family tradition to me!

Too Many Great Characters to List

The problem with Dr. Seuss is that he created a lot of great characters. I've listed my favorites here, but there are many others too.  Two that come instantly to mind are the Lorax and the Fox in Socks..both of which are also available as plush stuffed animals.

Unfortunately, sometimes these other characters can be kind of hard to find on Amazon. The Amazon marketplace is filled with many thousands of sellers, though, so the chances are good that you can find just the character you are looking for.

So rather than listing them all on this page, I'm just going to cheat and give you a link to all of the Dr Seuss Stuffed Animals on Amazon.  The good thing about this link is that it will bring up what's currently available and you can just make your selection.

Now, don't you have a book to read? Your children are waiting...

Dr. Seuss just seems to get better the older I get! My friend has a Thing 1 and Thing 2 set of plushies that I'm envious of :)

Those are some great ones too. It's funny, but while other people go around quoting the great poets and philosophers, I'm quoting Dr. Seuss! Maybe he was one of the great poets after all...

I'm with you -- I love Horton the best! We also read Red Fish, Blue Fish and the Things You Can Think Up about seven dozen million times each. Not to mention the ABC's -- I can still recite that one by heart. Green Eggs and Ham, too.
