Resin Adirondack Chairs: A Comfy and Durable Alternative

by belinda342

If you've always loved the look of Adirondack chairs, but hated the upkeep of the wooden ones...have we got great news for you!

Adirondack chairs have long been made of wood. That's okay, because the wooden look works great with this type of outdoor chair. The problem is that wood requires a lot of upkeep.

In order to keep your chair looking its best, you have to occasionally sand and paint it. And of course, there is always the possibility of getting a splinter from a non-maintained chair. Bottom line, the wooden chairs are great looking and comfortable, but they are also quite a bit of work.

But what if you could have that great look and comfortable seating without all the work? Well, now you can. With a plastic (or resin) Adirondack chair you'll never have to paint, sand, or worry about those pesty splinters ever again.

The Tale of the Adirondack Chair

How the Chair Got Its Name and More

Way back in 1903 a man by the name of Thomas Lee went on vacation.  In particular, he vacationed at his summer home in Westport, New York. As it happens, Westport is in the Adirondack mountains.

While staying there, he decided he needed some outdoor chairs for his home. After trying out a few different designs on his family, he finally came up with a winner that was promptly dubbed the "Westport Plank Chair".  He offered the design to a carpenter friend of his and the rest is history.

The first plank chairs were made of Hemlock, but later a variety of woods were used. These included Pine, Cedar, and Teak.  Each type of wood brought its own benefits and problems to the resulting chair...and they all required upkeep to maintain their great looking appeal.

Now, you can still find the wooden chairs, but there is also the option of resin or plastic.

The Benefits of Plastic Wood

We've already established that wooden chairs require upkeep and these don't.  But the benefits of a plastic Adirondack chair go a little further.

  • This plastic lumber is made to withstand the full force of the sun and rain and still keep its original color. It will resist fading much better than a painted chair.
  • The plastic will not chip, crack, or splinter. (Say good-bye to those nasty wooden splinters!)
  • The color will not peel. Even better the color is not simply surface color, but is consistent throughout the entire chair, so as the chair wears--the color will remain true.
  • Will not rot in very damp climates.
  • Requires no painting or staining and is naturally waterproof.

Best of all these very durable and heavy duty chairs are actually a very comfortable seating option. Perfect for patio furniture, or even poolside chairs.

Types of Plastic Adirondack Chairs

These chairs come in a variety of colors. You can find them in basic white or black, wood colors, or just about any color of the rainbow you want.

They also come in a variety of styles. There are so very many options to choose from on Amazon, we've decided to simply give you a link to the Amazon results for each type of Adirondack chair available.  Once on Amazon, you are sure to find that perfect chair in the perfect color you are looking for!

I have a fondness for wood, but you are right, the resin ones are way more durable

This is a great chair that stands up to weather, feels and looks great regardless. I love the color.

They really can take a beating...and still look great. Not true of the wooden versions, though.
