But, of course, the go-to toys that really occupy the toddlers for hours or for minutes – OK, who am I kidding, aren’t the steadfast toys at all. They are the simplest and cheapest household items that are so banal to your eyes that they don’t even register as toys to you at all. These are things never intended to be toys but they are brilliant and they can engage them for hours.

Parents are regularly reminded of how it is a massive squandering of money while buying expensive toys for kids. While they get attracted to the dazzle and rattle of shining new toys coming with sheen and promise of new and latest learning techniques with technological advancements – what is the point really. The glittering that you get after spending your hard earned money might last just 10 minutes.

Your little girl or boy might have plenty of toys. Maybe a life-size doll from Madame Alexander or the American doll, but are these toys abandoned and gathering dust. You perhaps need to catch these mutant babies attention and find a toy that can really occupy them for hours or perhaps some minutes. Toddlers cannot focus for long time; their attraction for things are short lived. You need to catch their attention and choose toys that are feasible for their small feet and tiny hands to reach in addition to their fleeting attention. Their span of interest changes fairly quickly.

For instance if  a simple merchandize like a small  kitchenware item is gathering their attention and admiration, you might rather give them that cup than piles of cars and dinosaurs lying around the corner. It might be that they do not know what to do with them. Toddlers adore playing with water. Give them a cup and spoon and show them how to fill the water and empty it. And lo! You will find them doing it for hours without ever tiring of that monotonous job. 

It is possible that a one year old needs change of activity. How about piling a stack of plates and giving them something that their hands have control on.  They will easily make themselves busy, you can probably go and cook a lavish dinner while keeping an eye on them. Needless to say, a constant vigil is required even if they are busy and you have to be definitely wary about choking hazards. Don’t give them anything that they may want to gobble, they are capable of doing it in a fleeting second while you are busy doing household chores.

There’s the light-up singing talking helicopter and the tiger-shaped xylophone and the push-popper. Then there are piles of tiny cars of varying designs, plastic dinosaurs and blocks.

Toys that can play music are awesome for babies who love to dance. A musical book that carries colorful illustrations in addition to rhymes can be very enjoyable to the kid. The toddler can sing while watching the pictures and engage as it learns the figures and characters of the fairy tales.

Babies love to imitate and this is how they learn so fast. Sing and dance while telling them about the musical story. Act and enact while playing with the musical toy. Your baby will love your participation.

Learning to walk is fun for a one year old, push and pull toys make the activity more enjoyable. A colorful and steady construction that can carry the weight of the baby while it is pulling can be very engaging.

Handcrafted wooden toys that do not come apart are great tools for kids who have learnt standing up on their own and now want to explore the treasure of walking. They are a great means to teach skills such as hand, legs and eye co-ordination.

Shape and color toys can teach the toddlers about differentiating different forms. They are attracted by colours and want to discover every item through touch and taste. Beware; any hazardous toy part should be not a part of the set. Also, you need to take special care and watch that anything small that fits in their mouth does not end there.
