There are some wonderful tablets available on the market right now and they are perfect for teens to have and use. Allowing mobility in their computing no matter where they are. 

The functions of the tablets vary slightly by the manufacturer but are basically run on Apps that the teen can choose to personalize their tablet device. 

They can use the web to do research for school homework and projects and even take it to school with them. So, it is a useful tool.

For the fun part, they can usually stream movies and call up music to listen to. Also watch the latest YouTube video that everyone is passing around as so hot you can't miss it.

The tablet will allow them to connect with their favorite social media site along with sending and receiving emails. Plus they can play their favorite games and read a book if they want.

Your teen may already have a cell phone but you are thinking that it is time for an upgrade especially if their phone is one that would be considered kind of "old school", now. I am sure that your teen will most definitely want a smartphone that has all or at least some of the new "bells and whistles" that come on the newer phones.

A laptop comes in mighty handy for our teen to do their school work on. They may have to do research for a project or a term paper and they may need to type it out and print it to hand in. They great thing about a laptop is that they can use it in their room and if necessary take it to school, if they need to. 

I suggest that for a teen, you find one that is lightweight so that when they do have to take it somewhere it will not strain their backs. They may still have some growing going on, you know.

The Macbooks out rate the other laptops by quite a lot. In fact, in my research the first eleven on the list were the Apple run Macbooks.

If you are going to get a Windows based laptop, I would recommend getting one with Windows 7 or 8 on it. Windows 8 is going to have a more mobile ready functionality and is good if you choose a laptop that has a touch screen feature. Convertible laptops running windows should also have the new Windows 8 on them.
