Final Thoughts from the Arrow Episode "Beacon of Hope"

by StevenHelmer

Thoughts from the season 4 television episode that first aired March 30, 2016.

Synopsis: Brie Larvan (Emily Kinney) escapes prison and uses her robotic bee army to hold Palmer Technologies hostage until Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) gives up the microchip technology that is allowing her to walk. It's up to Oliver (Stephen Amell) to save her, Thea (Willa Holland) and Donna (Charlotte Ross) with help from Curtis (Echo Kellum).

Another Person Knows Oliver's Secret

Once Curtis was first introduced to the series, I figured it was only a matter of time before would end up in the Green Arrow's lair. In fact, when he was introduced, I thought that was a sign Felicity would be killed off or would leave Star City. So, the fact he discovers Oliver's identity in this episode wasn't much of a surprise.

What I find comical, however, isn't the fact yet another person knows Oliver's horribly kept secret. It's the fact Curtis apparently didn't even suspect it, despite knowing Felicity is part of the Green Arrow's team and her fiance/friends strongly resemble the heroes he has seen in the news.

And I thought Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) not being able to figure it out was bad.

Speaking of Darhk...

Why isn't Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne) in protective custody or something? Last I checked, there is almost no evidence that supports the allegations against Darhk and the only reason he is behind bars waiting trial is because of Lance's testimony. That, to me, means the suspended police captain has a big target on his back.

Granted, at least based on Malcolm's (John Barrowman) comments, HIVE has no interest in helping Darhk get out of prison. But, the episode also strongly indicated he has his own supporters outside.

The fact he is walking free with little or no protection does make me think he is the one in the grave Oliver will be visiting very soon.

Does Oliver Need to Get a Day Job?

I actually started asking this question when she called off the engagement and they stopped living together. She was the one who supported both him and Team Arrow financially and, now that she is no longer part of the team, I just don't see how that's going to work for him. In fact, other than Laurel (Katie Cassidy), I don't think any of them have a job that pays a salary.

Are Sparks Starting to Fly Between Oliver and Laurel?

Oliver is in a bad spot right now and it's obvious his breakup with Felicity has been tough on him. But, with that door closed (at least for now), I'm starting to wonder if a potential love triangle is starting to form.

Let's face it, Laurel has every reason to hate Oliver. Yet, she has been one of his biggest supporters. Plus, she seems to still be the one he turns to when he needs emotional support, even more than he did with Felicity. If he and Felicity don't get back together soon (and assuming she isn't killed at some point), I can't help but wonder if maybe him and Laurel will once again become a couple.

Final Opinion

I love Emily Kinney's Brie Larvan character and it was awesome seeing her again in this episode, especially since her bees provide such an interesting challenge. I hope to see her again in a future episode.
