I'm taking my mother to the neurologist today. Hopefully I will find out why she is delusional and paranoid. I also hope to get some advice on how to handle this.

Sending good thoughts your way. I've had to deal with that too and it's a hard row to hoe. Let us know the outcome of the visit. Lana or LIl aka Ragtimelil RagtimeLil's Store on Weebly

Thank you everybody. Well, she has early onset Alzheimers with severe delusions and paranoia. Even the neurologist seemed flabbergasted by the delusional stories she was telling him. Some of you may remember she was in the hospital in June. I called the paramedics, because I thought she was having a stroke. She stayed a few days and the hospital neurologist said he was treating her for a seizure. He said she didn't have a stroke. Turns out she did have a stroke and a seizure. Today's Dr. said they can go hand in hand. Getting Drs. to communicate with you is almost impossible. I can tell you from my experience with my aunt and my mother that you really need a strong advocate when you get old. Brenda Reeves

Thank you Katie. I appreciate that. My brother is flying in this Friday to stay with her while I go on vacation. I told him to be prepared for some bizarre stories. Brenda Reeves

I'm so sorry to hear this, Brenda, but at least you know what you're dealing with now. There's not much I can do over in Britain, but if you need someone to vent on via messager or chat, I'm your woman. Good luck with all that's coming ahead; and I hope you have a great vacation. Refresh that spirit and clear your mind. You deserve the relaxation. <3 My stuff: A Writer's Guide to Wizzley | Beautiful Britain!

I'm glad your brother is coming to stay so that you can have a vacation Brenda as looking after someone with Alzheimers is draining especially when they also have delusions. Like Jo I'm a bit far away to be able to offer any practical assistance, but my inbox is always open if you need to talk about it. One thing is to keep an eye on any changes the doctors make to her medications as they can sometimes affect them a lot - do you get district nurses visiting you over there? The only positive is that when someone has Alzheimers they do seem happy because they're usually unaware that there's anything wrong with them, I think it's a lot harder on the people around them which is why you need to look after yourself. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way. |
