Foyer Lighting Ideas

by marciag

There are many foyer lighting ideas that you can use to enhance the illumination in your entryway and it all depends on how your foyer connects the various rooms.

Many people don't care about proper foyer illumination because it looks like an insignificant space only good to pass through, however particularly when it is situated at an entry, it makes a lot of difference. Many times the foyer is the very first impression that a visitors gets from your home interior.

Basically the foyer is a small and usually narrow space or room that connects either to the living room, the dining room or family room, allowing you to pass through from one place to the other. For example in our old flat where I was living with my parents, the foyer started at the entryway and it passed in front of most of the rooms, such as the living room, the kitchen, the bedroom, the office, ending at the last room which was the third bedroom.

Using Chandeliers In The Foyer

If you like chandeliers, this is a perfect place to add one or two, depending on how long is your hallway. The chandelier tends to add a spark of great light that illuminates the entire area and also adds to the ambient of the narrow room.

You can add a wrought-iron chandelier if you like a rustic ambient, or you can go with the classic crystal chandeliers if you have enough space for it to hang from the ceiling.

Before installing your chandelier, however, you need to know the right width for the foyer, which is easily determined by adding together the width and length of the hallway. So if your foyer is 10 feet by 20 feet, then the total dimension will be 30 feet, and this is the max chandelier's width that you can add.

As for its height, there is a single consideration that I can think of. Basically the chandelier bottom should be around 7 feet up from the floor. This means that depending on how tall the foyer is, you might either go with a two or three tiered chandelier (for a taller hallway) or you might have to do with a flush mount chandelier, which is pretty close to the ceiling.

Are Suspended Ceiling Lights Popular?

In fact suspended (or drop) ceiling lights are quite popular in many foyers or hallways. They really shine nicely from above. You can use a dimmer switch to adjust the level of light that comes through, and that is something I like to use depending on the current season.

If you like inner decor and you are thrilled with interesting ideas, you can play with the dimmer switch by leaving some items in the shadow while using light to focus on the way ahead in the corridor.

For A Long Entry Use Wall Sconces

Some houses are built with quite long (and sometimes narrow) hallways. If you have a long foyer, it is best to take advantage of the many wall sconces that you can place at equal intervals on either side of the walls.

This can give a festive and formal appeal to the hallway and make it more elegant looking.

Here are some ways to use wall sconces in your entryway:

* Spotlight accent pieces and draw attention to them

* Give extra light to your door especially if it has an ornamental design

* Highlight the architectural features of the hallway

* Give the foyer a hotel room-like look

Desk Lamps Are Not Only For The Bedroom

Desk lamps are mostly popular in bedrooms to use as reading lights, however they make in fact quite elegant foyer lighting options, especially in a wider foyer.

For example you can add a small table that holds two desk lamps, a phone and some ornamental accessories and a place to drop your keys. Between the two lamps you can add an elegant wall mirror that will reflect the light from the lamp.

Such settings can really create a homey and magical entry for when you come back from work.
