How To Use Essential Oils With Reiki

by marciag

I've been using essential oils with Reiki ever since I got my level I practitioner certificate and I have to say, essential oils and Reiki go hand in hand together.

If you're wondering whether essential oils and Reiki go well together, the answer is a resounding yes. I am a level II Reiki practitioner (albeit only practicing on friends, family members and myself) and a hobby aromatherapist.

My involvement in both areas of alternative healing has started a few years back, and it seems the more I practice Reiki and the more I use essential oils, the more I love being
surrounded by them.

Usually people associate essential oils with aromatherapy, and with good reason. Afterall pure natural unadulterated oils are at the base of aromatherapy massage or inhalation.

For the most part Reiki is associated with meditative and relaxing music, however resent studies have shown that bringing the two disciplines together is a win-win situation both for the practitioner and for the patient (or customer) alike.

Aromatherapy For The Emotions

Aromatherapy For The Emotions is a great book that I recommend anyonewho starts out with essential oils and wants to learn more aboutaromatherapy. While Reiki can not really be learned from books (you can learn ABOUT Reiki, but you can't be attuned

What Are Essential Oils And What Is Reiki

Essential oils are oil extracts from plants using steam distillation, a method that gives high quality natural oils devoid of any synthetic chemicals.

Essential oils are used in aromatherapy massage as well as in inhalation of the healing fragrance that helps bring about positive mood and a better state of body and mind.

Reiki is a hands-on healing practice that comes from Japan. The most popular style (the one I have also trained in) is called Usui Reiki, a Reiki system developed by Mikao Usui in 1922 in Japan. The practice involves laying both hands on the body to transfer the universal life force energy to the patient to promote healing and wellbeing.

I became attuned to level I Reiki in 2005 and to level II in 2006. Ever since I've been practicing Reiki and experimenting with using various essential oils that go really well with this hands on healing art.

Using Essential Oils With Reiki

When I use essential oils with Reiki, this is what I usually do:

  1. Depending on what I want to heal or bring about (calm and relaxed state, stress relief, positive mood, etc), I choose the essential oils I will add to the oil burner or aromatherapy diffuser.

  2. I say the Reiki prayer and make the Cho-Ku-Rei power symbol above the client (or in front of me if I do Reiki self-healing)

  3. While I perform the Reiki healing on each part of the client's body (hovering my hands at around 3-4 inches without touching the person), I inhale the fragrant aroma of the essential oil, while the client is relaxing, inhaling the aroma as well during the Reiki treatment.

  4. Once the Reiki session is over, I make the power symbol again, say the Reiki prayer and give thanks, and then discuss the session with the client.

Enhancing Essential Oils using Reiki

Which Essential Oils To Combine With Reiki

There are several essential oils that can be used with Reiki healing and which will be used will strongly depend on what the client actually needs healing for. Essential oils promote healing on multiple levels: mental, emotional and physical at the same time.

If the person needs Reiki for depression, I choose essential oils for depression, such as lavender, neroli, jasmin or chamomile. I set aside a few oils that help with depression and let the client choose by smelling them. She will tell me which 2-3 oils she wants to smell during the Reiki session.

If, for example, she needs a Reiki session for relaxing and stress relief, then some of the oils chosen for her to sniff and decide from will be geranium, clary sage, lavender and lemon.

When I do Reiki self-healing, I usually use lavender and frankincense in most of the cases. It is just something I tend to associate Reiki with and I get the best results using these two oils over others.

Using Essential Oils With Reiki For Distant Healing

Having been attuned to lvl II Reiki, I can also give distant healing. Many times I send Reiki healing to my parents and people who ask for it. For distant healing I use essential oils in a different way.

1. I place a drop of the chosen essential oi on each of my palms, after which I rub gently the palms together, letting the aroma of the essential oils to rise through the palms movement and heat.

2. Saying the Reiki prayer, I then make the Reiki distant healing symbol called Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen.

3. Next I hold up my hands and let the Reiki energy flow towards the person I am distantly healing, while at the same time I inhale the aroma of the essential oils from my palms.

4. Finally I close with the Reiki power symbol and stay for another minute to ground myself.
