Strategy Games Like Age of Empires - Free, Online & Paid Games

I have to admit that Warcraft 3 was probably one of the only other games like Age of Empires that I loved on the same level as the AoE series.

What really attracted me was the almost RPG style features with story and a hero character that you could take from your first mission to the end of the campaign.

Warcraft 3 split the game into several campaigns that let you take control of humans, elves and undead. Each of them bring really good variety so the three campaigns do feel very unique. The campaigns all have their own hero character for whom you'll buy items to equip and alter their growth by choosing skill order.

In a similar manner to how StarCraft was structured these campaigns are linked and give you a great story that intertwines with the real time strategy gameplay.

I got plenty of game hours out of the original StarCraft and even more from StarCraft 2. While the campaign in both games is strong the multiplayer communities for these are the largest in the RTS genre. This makes it an attractive option for Age of Empires fans that want something with great multiplayer options.

The games are linked story wise so I recommend starting your adventure with the first StarCraft, despite it's age it has a huge amount of gameplay depth and it holds up very well against more modern real time strategy games like Age of Empires.

The StarCraft series follows the adventures of three races (humans, zerg and protoss) as they battle each other in various scenarios. You'll be able to play as all of these which each have their own strategy elements to explore.
