Halloween Costumes to Make at Home

by NausetViews

Need a great costume for a party? Halloween costumes that you make at home are easy, inexpensive and lots of fun. Here are some ideas to help you pull together the perfect outfit.

Halloween costumes don't have to cost a fortune, or take a lot of time to create. Some of the best Halloween costumes are ones that you can make at home. You don't have to sew, or go out and buy anything either.

We've put together a collection of Halloween costumes to make at home. Most of these don't require you to buy anything, although for some of the more creative ideas you may need a little paint, fabric, or accessories.

What makes a great Halloween costume? Anything that excites you. I think that's why Halloween is so much fun. There are no rules, or guidelines to follow. Just use your imagination and put together an outfit that appeals to you. Whether it's something scary, funny, silly, or bizarre, the secret to making a great costume is to make it unique. But most importantly, just have fun!

This roller coaster costume is one of the best I've seen.  All it took was some cardboard, paint, clothes and a little ingenuity.  It just goes to show you that Halloween costumes are all about being creative.  Push the envelope and see what you can come up with.  Think of your favorite hobbies, sports and interests as inspiration for a cool Halloween costume.

Mummy Halloween Costume

A mummy costume is very easy to make and is perfect for kids and adults.  All you need are some clothes, or sheets, plus a little face paint.  Face painting is a really easy way to create a costume.  The primary focus will be on the face, so you can add just about anything you want for clothes and accessories to complement whatever you paint.

Clown Halloween Costume

A clown costume is another Halloween costume that lets you use face paints to create a costume.  Choose what type of clown you want to be and then add clothes and accessories to accentuate your clown style.

Going for a happy clown look?  Then maybe you want to add some oversized clothes and shoes.  If you don't have any at home to use, then grabbing some clothes at your local thrift store is a cheap way to make a costume.

Face Painting Ideas

Face painting is great to use for Halloween costumes, but it's also perfect to have on hand for other events that pop-up during the year.  Kids love to get their faces painted for birthday parties and it is also a fun activity to do for special occasions.  Maybe the family is going to a 4th of July celebration, or a big football game?  Add a little face paint to get in the spirit.

Here are a few books to give you some face painting ideas.

A ghost costume is a classic homemade Halloween costume.  It is so easy to make and there's no need for sewing.  These costumes are also ideal for any age and as you can see with this picture, there's also room for some creative license when you make a ghost costume.  This one is a Charlie Brown Halloween Costume.  Isn't it great!

Remember when I said that there are no rules for making a Halloween costume?  This picture is a perfect example of that.  All you have to do is throw some mismatched, or silly looking, clothes together and you've created an easy Halloween costume.

Zombie Halloween Costumes

Zombie costumes are another great idea for a Halloween costume that you can make at home.  As essentially a walking dead person, the costume just needs to have a dark and ghoulish tone to it.  This is another time when face paint and makeup can help.  Add a little white face paint, give yourself some dark eyes, add a little fake blood and you're the perfect zombie.  Clothes for a zombie can be whatever old, grungy outfit you have on hand.

Musicians are always popular and Halloween is a fun time to dress up like your favorite rock star.  Use your favorite artist as inspiration, or use your own imagination to make a retro Halloween costume like this punk outfit.  Costumes inspired by the 70s and 80s are also a lot of fun.

Glad you liked it Jo! I love that it was made using cardboard. You can make a lot of neat costumes with stuff you already have on hand.
