Home Brewing - In The Beginning

Home brewing is an enormously popular hobby that will also save you lots of money. Home brewing and wine making at home is not something new. In fact history shows us that people have been brewing at home for 7,000 years.

In early the early days good quality drinking water was quite often hard to find. So beer became the only safe way to quench your thirst without risking your health from dirty water supplies. Centuries of home brewing has given us the ability to create alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages and it has become a significant part of the modern-day society.

There are two parts to home brewing supplies: ingredients and equipment. In the video below, you will notice that Coopers, a world leader in home brewing kits, has combined ingredients and equipment into one convenient and professional package for the home brewing enthusiast. I have personally used Coopers products for approx 10 years and have never had a failure.

Brewing Supplies

Home brewing supplies typically come in kits which include:

  • malt extract
  • hops
  • yeasts

You can also buy other ingredients which will change the taste of your beer.If you are new to home brewing, then the best way is to start out slow. You don’t need to rush out and buy lots of brewing supplies, just use some very basic starter kits and get a few batches of beer under your belt first to learn the art.

Then add more equipment and supplies as time and money allows, and if you feel you would like to experiment a little. I find there is no need to get all fancy, but some of my friends do like to create their own unique brews, so it's up to you.

Brewing Equipment

The home brewing equipment you will need is pretty much only used for brewing beer so you will need to think of storage ideas for the times you will not being using it. (Ingredients are not considered as home brewing equipment, but they are nonetheless very important). A small kitchen cupboard or small closet would be more than sufficient.

Basic home brewing equipment is quite economical to purchase as you don’t need much to get started. All of the equipment you will need will only be somewhere in the vicinity of  $100 to $150.

One of the most important things to remember with brewing equipment is that it all must be thoroughly sterilized. Everything needs to be properly sanitized including:

  • thermometer
  • stirring spoon
  • carboy
  • siphon hose
  • rubber stopper
  • airlock

If you try to take short cuts with your equipment at this stage you run the risk of a bad brew which will be undrinkable.  Note: There aren't any identified human pathogens that can stay active in beer, and so you don’t have to worry about poisoning yourself, your family or your buddies.

Homemade Beer

Making homemade beer is a fun activity, with lots of expectation and excitement of creating a great batch that you can enjoy with friends. Once you take pleasure in your first batch of homemade beer, you will probably be hooked. It’s a rewarding result for your efforts and you’ll probably want to look into new methods, new blends, and new ideas of making your homemade beer even more full of flavor.

The process for homemade beer is very simple and straightforward. Once you try it, you may even think it was too simple. But that’s the beauty of it – it doesn’t take a lot of time to prepare, and once your ingredients are mixed up and fermenting in your sanitized vessels, all you need to do is sit back and wait for bottling day.

There are many types of homemade beer available in brewing kits, including:

  • Stout
  • Lager
  • Ale
  • Bitter

Each beer kit package typically includes:

  • brewing sugar
  • brewing yeast
  • carbonation drops

This ensures that the ingredients are in the right proportion and you will therefore get a perfect homemade beer.

I agree with you Tolovaj, there is something about home brew beer that is tastier than commercial beer, and it's so much fun to make. All you really need is the ability to follow a few instructions and a little patience for the finished outcome.

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Hope you have a great day!

I have couple of friends who experimented a lot with home brewing in student years. One of them later even changed study from chemistry to food processing only to master beer brewing (he went to Ireland for year or something like that)... When we met, there was always something new to explore.
I have never tried commercial beer with better taste than home made beer:)
