I've always loved art, and I've always loved dogs. It's no surprise then that I would love dogs in art. Some years ago I specialized in animal portraits. I still have some of those paintings of animals I have loved.
There are some old masters and even new masters that have some wonderful paintings that include dogs. I've collected a few of my favorites and thought to share them with you.
My Favorite Dogs in Art Paintings
by Ragtimelil
Here's a little sample of my favorite dogs in art. I've included some old masters, some new masters and one old timer.
Sir Edwin Henry Landseer
Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, RA (7 March 1802 - 1 October 1873) was so well regarded as a painter of animals, especially life-saving dogs, that one variety of Newfoundland was named after him. Queen Victoria commissioned several of his paintings to be done of her family and her dogs.
Dignity and Impudence
Edwin Landseer
Another wonderful Landseer painting. This was one of his most popular paintings, commissioned by Jacob Bell. The dogs, the bloodhound, Grafton and the West Highland terrier, Scratch, belonged to Bell.
The Connoisseurs
Sir Edwin Henry Landseer
This is a self portrait by Landseer with two dogs looking over his shoulder. This painting was done as a gift for King Edward VII. No mention was found of whether these dogs belonged to Landseer, but they evidently are his critics.

Charles Burton Barber
This is one of my very favorite paintings by Victorian painter Charles Burton Barber (1845 - 1894). He was another one of Queen Victoria's favorite painters and was commissioned by her as well to do paintings of the royal family and their pets.
He was regarded as a bit sentimental, but his wonderful renditions of the subjects made up for it.
I can just feel the distress shown in the dog's face.
Another Barber painting that I just couldn't resist. I've hugged my dogs that way.
John Sargent Noble
(English, 1848-1896)
I wasn't able to find out much about John Sargent Noble. I do love his landscapes with sheep and sheepdogs. I have a fondness for these subjects.
Carol Saxe
There are some more contemporary painters I love as well. Here's one by Carol Saxe. She has a book out, The Dog Lovers' Guide to the Good Life that is part art book, part guide book on things to do with your dog.
Sam Toft
I couldn't resist this one. Sam Toft has been described as a whimsey-prone artist.
My Work
I love working in pastels and experimenting with watercolor. I had a whimsey period too and put up several designs on Zazzle and CafePress.
I haven't done any painting for a while. I haven't had the space to set up. Perhaps in the future I can start again.

Very nice dog portraits. It must take a lot of patience to draw or paint any animal.
