Did You Know?

Making "The Crossing"

CROSSING THE ATLANTIC

  1. In 1492, it took Christopher Columbus's ships ten weeks to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
  2. Today the Queen Mary 2 makes the crossing in 6 days.
  3. The modern record for a crossing by a passenger ship is 3 days, 10 hours, and 40 minutes. That was accomplished by the famous SS United States - in 1952!

Nautical Cutting Boards

For Preparing a Seafood Dinner

A really nice cutting board is always a welcome gift for newlyweds, or for someone setting up their first home. They make a wonderful hostess gift, too.

The compass rose is a universally recognized symbol of navigation. But, it particularly brings to mind maritime travels, and is appreciated the world over by sea lovers.

Here's one on a glass cutting board that will fit in just perfectly with either a nautical decor or a coastal decor.  They're available in several sizes

More Marine Trivia

Fog Horns, Lobsters, and Salt
  1. Musical Fog Horn - While most cruise ship fog horns sound the standard "EEEEEE-OOOOOO" sound, the ones from Disney Cruise Line play the tune of first line of the song that begins "When you wish upon a star." Sometimes, we can hear the special horn from our yard when a DCL ship leaves port. **
  2. Lobsters are not red in the ocean. They are actually a brownish or dingy green color. This actually a mix of brown, green, and some red, which is masked by the other colors. It is when they are cooked that the red pigment emerges.
  3. Salt Water - The Atlantic Ocean is saltier than the Pacific Ocean. But the Dead Sea is eight times saltier! In fact, the Dead Sea is too salty for anything to live in it.

**NOTE: If you'd like to hear the different sounds of the fog horns of a cuple of differnt ships, look a little farther down the page. You'll find two different videos. On one, the Queen Mary 2 blows her horn. On the other, you'll hear the meoldious tones from a Disney ship.

Ship Wheel Table and Wine Rack

For 25 Bottles

A lot of us don't have a separate bar in our home, so we keep our wine in the kitchen, or in a close by room..

Why not keep that wine right on your counter in a nautical wine bottle holder?   This set of three fish shaped wine holders can go on your bar or counter if  you have plenty of space there.  If not, use the smallest fish to keep your six favorite bottles, and stand the medium and large ones on the floor or a sideboard nearby.  Together, they hold up to 35 bottles of vino - plenty for most of us!  The design will please nautical fans and avid sport fishermen alike.

You might even keep the smaller one near your cooking preparation area.  After all, if you're cooking with wine, you need to keep those ingredients handy. and sample them for freshness from time to time. It's your duty.

It's nice to be able to combine form and function!

Nautical Trivet

Ocean Blue

Some people use trivets strictly for decoration, others use them as coasters, spoon rests, or they place hot bowls and plates on them.

What's YOUR favorite use for a trivet?

Here's one that just may make you yearn to spend a little time at sea ... a view of the wide, blue ocean, as seen from the balcony of a cruise ship.

It's just right for holding a nice warm cup of tea or cocoa. (While you wait for that seafood dinner to be ready, of course.)
