3 Relaxation Techniques For You to Try

Relaxation is a method of releasing built up tension and returning balance to both your mind and body. Relaxation techniques are crucial in controlling your stress. It is well known that stress contributes to the onset of many diseases, including some life-threatening diseases, so you would be wise to actively monitor your stress levels.

Relaxation, though such a simple concept, could possibly be the most important thing in helping you to maintain your mind and your body in a healthy state. Doctors often recommend relaxation therapy for some of their patients who develop stress as a result of their health condition or the treatment they are receiving. So it isn't only about everyday stress that we need relaxation. Relaxation can boost your physical, emotional and psychological health.

Let's have a look at some of the more common relaxation techniques; What you will find is that you should be doing these either in a seated or lying position for best results.

1. Visualization - with visualization you create mental images which allow you to place yourself into more peaceful surroundings, such as at a beach or by a lake, or whatever would be a calming environment for you. You try to imagine what it looks like, smells like, what sounds do you hear? birds chirping, the waves lapping onto the sand? Involve any of your senses that apply to your calming place because the more the merrier.

2. Muscle Relaxation (Progressive) - with this relaxation technique you focus on slowly tensing and then relaxing your muscles. Some therapists recommend that you start at your toes and work your way up to your head. In addition to this technique helping you to relax all of your muscles you will also learn an awareness of what muscle tension feels like so that you can be more prepared to deal with it the next time it happens.

3. Autogenic Relaxation - this involves a combination of the previous two methods of relaxation. A great example of this technique would be you visualzing yourself in your peaceful environment while also focusing on your heart rate, your breathing as you control it by taking deep breaths and releasing them slowly, as well as being aware of any other physical sensations you may have.
