Review of Perdue Popcorn Chicken

by StevenHelmer

I purchased this at Costco this past weekend. Read to find out what I thought of it.

Product Description: Frozen popcorn chicken bites from the Perdue brand that are prepared either in the microwave or by baking. I purchased a 4-pound bag of this product at Costco this past weekend for $12.99 as an easy snack/lunch item for my family and finally had an opportunity to try these at lunch earlier today.

Review

My wife, oldest daughter and I ran to Costco this past weekend to stock up on some food items before a busy week. While there, we stopped in the freezer section and, when I saw they had a 4-pound bag of Perdue Popcorn Chicken, I decided to make the purchase.

I primarily bought this product for my daughters because, with their busy school/figure skating schedules, I've found it's best to have items like this on hand for days when they might not have much time but are hungry. And, the fact the package had four pounds of the popcorn chicken was an attractive thing for me because it meant it would last longer. As it turns out, it exceeded my expectations.

One of the things that immediately surprised me (and my oldest daughter) when I first opened the package was the size of the chicken pieces. When I purchased this, I figured it would be like other frozen popcorn chicken products with small pieces. Instead, Perdue's version of popcorn chicken honestly isn't much smaller than your standard chicken nugget. This was something I did find I liked about this product because it meant I could make a smaller amount of the chicken go a long way.

Another thing I found I liked about this product was the overall quality. I don't expect too much from frozen products and there is still definitely a difference between this and fresh chicken. But, the meat in the popcorn bites was surprisingly decent and seemed to be of much higher quality than some other brands I've purchased. If nothing else, I can honestly say they weren't full of fat.

One of my biggest concerns when I first tried these was the seasoning in the breading. The popcorn chicken looked like it might be a bit on the spicy side, something my youngest daughter would not enjoy. However, that was not the case. There was definitely some seasoning in the breading. But, it wasn't anything I would describe as spicy. As a result, I'm confident this is a purchase everyone in my family will enjoy.

Final Opinion

Based primarily on other frozen chicken products we've purchased, I really wasn't sure what to expect when we bought this product. However, the Perdue Popcorn Chicken definitely exceeded my expectations and would be a product I would consider purchasing again.

StevenHelmer, Thank you for practical information, pretty pictures and product lines.
In particular, I appreciate being able to keep a list for keeping the pantry and the refrigerator stocked with quality bagged, boxed, canned, frozen, jarred products that help me extend what I make fresh, only to discover I've underestimated the number of re-serving requests.

What would you all serve as salads or side dishes or desserts if chicken bits were the main course?

I too have bought this product. It does go a lot further, lasting longer and provides far more meals than I thought. The pieces are big, and have a unique taste.
