Review of Schwan's Beer Battered Alaska Cod

by StevenHelmer

My wife purchased this from Schwan's home delivery service. Was it worth the money?

Product Description: Frozen Alaska cod battered in an amber beer batter and available through Schwan’s for home preparation. The company currently sells a 1.5-pound box of this product on their web site for $15.49. We purchased a box a couple weeks ago from their home delivery service and my wife baked the fish as part of our Friday night family dinner last night.

Restaurant Quality Fish

Schwan's Beer Battered Alaska CodEven though I do think Schwan’s tends to be a bit on the expensive side, they also tend to offer food items I just can’t find here in town. That’s why, when my wife decided to start ordering from them again, I wasn’t opposed. This was especially true of this particular product because good fish is hard to come by here and, even though it was more expensive than I really would prefer to pay, I figured it was worth giving it a try. And, as it turns out, it was.

One of the first things I noticed about this fish when my wife baked it in the oven was the lack of grease. I’ve had plenty of other fish filets like this that were practically swimming in grease by the time they were done cooking. That, needless to say, is a bit of an appetite killer for me. So, the fact this fish was the exact opposite of that was a big bonus.

The overall taste and quality of this product actually ended up exceeding my expectations. The beer batter turned out to be very crispy. This is something that isn’t always the case with most store-bought frozen fish brands. The batter also had a good flavor to it. I could taste the beer in it, something that also isn’t always the case, and even my daughter, who can be very picky at times, said she loved it.

As far as the fish itself was concerned, I was also impressed. Unlike some other frozen fish, these were actual filets, not pre-processed, ground up fish packed into a filet-like shape. Much like the lack of grease, this made the fish much more appetizing and definitely improved our overall enjoyment. In fact, I think this fish was as good as the fish we would normally see at our local restaurant fish fries. And, when you compare the price to those, it actually isn’t as high as it first seems.

Final Opinion

Alaska CodSince it is kind of expensive, I can’t see myself buying this particular product on a regular basis. However, I did like it and, if I did have the money, it is something I would consider purchasing again.

StevenHelmer, Thank you for practical information, pretty pictures and product lines.
What desserts, drinks and side dishes did you all have?

It helps to know about this product. Cod is perhaps more often on mark-down and sale than any other fish where I shop. I like knowing about the nice frozen products just in case of a dinner event where the number of guests and -- because of "tastes like more" -- of servings exceeds what was expected.
