Review of Valu Time Complete Corn Muffin Mix

by StevenHelmer

I purchased a box of this mix at one of our local grocery stores. Read to find out what I thought of it.

Product Description: Corn bread/muffin mix from the Valu Time brand that is prepared by adding water or milk and baking. I purchased a box of this complete mix at one of our local grocery stores yesterday morning for 49 cents. I used the mix to make a small loaf of corn bread to go with the pinto bean stew I was making.

Review

I decided to make pinto bean stew for dinner last night and, when I told my wife my plans, she asked me to make some corn bread to go with it. Since I needed to grab some ham for my stew anyway, I stopped at one of our local grocery stores and purchased this mix.

The Valu Time corn mix was slightly less than the brand I normally buy, 49 cents instead of 75 cents. But, that was not the reason I purchased it. Instead, I wasn't sure if the eggs in our refrigerator were still good and I didn't want to purchase more eggs until I knew for sure. So, I ended up buying this mix because it didn't require one. And, as it turns out, it ended up being a pretty good purchase.

As I had hoped, this product was very easy to prepare. All I had to do was add milk to the mix, stir, add the batter to the bread pan and bake it. Baking time included, it took me only about 20 minutes.

In fact, it was actually a little too easy. And, because I was actually expecting a bit more work, I was a little concerned the quality wouldn't be as good. As it turns out, this was not an issue.

The mix was enough to make a small loaf of corn bread (more than enough for what we needed it for). I made sure to try a piece of this shortly after taking it out of the oven and it was as good as any of the other (more expensive) mixes I've purchased in the past. While I'd probably be lying if I said it was the best corn bread I've ever eaten, I thought it was more than adequate for the price.

It also proved to be very filling. I was concerned the loaf would barely be enough for dinner, even with the pinto bean stew. But, we still had half of it leftover when we were done. The fact we got a second meal out of it definitely added value to my purchase, especially when you consider the already very low price.

Final Opinion

I purchased this product for convenience but, after trying it, did find quite a bit about it I liked. The fact it is cheaper than most other brands is a nice perk too. It's a corn mix I would definitely recommend as a result of that.

StevenHelmer, Thank you for practical information, pretty pictures and product lines.
Corn bread and corn muffins are such crowd-pleasers, as sides and snacks, that it's nice to know about a boxed product that works. And it's so convenient not to have to worry about eggs, since less than fresh eggs can ruin the whole corn-bread, corn-muffin experience.
