Cats on Roombas

by JoHarrington

An iRobot Roomba is a great vacuum cleaner for those with pets or allergies. It's also the perfect size for cats to hitch a ride, as many cat-lovers have hilariously discovered.

It was a geek who first introduced me to the Roomba iRobot cleaners. She had one in her house, which she had named Floorence.

Unlike most vacuums, this robotic cleaner doesn't require the intervention of a human being in order to suck up grime from the carpet. A Roomba rests in its charging dock until a pre-set time, then rumbles off all alone.

All alone, that is, until the cat notices it on its cleaning patrol. Then the whole thing suddenly doubles as a Cat Car!

Roomba Cats Love to Ride the Robot Cleaner!

It's a cat dressed as a shark, pursuing a duck, while riding on a Roomba. Just an everyday occurrence in anyone's kitchen, surely.

Image: Cat dressed as a shark, chasing a duck, on a RoombaYou may be wondering what on Earth you're looking at, particularly if your introduction to this whole phenomenon is pictures like this one.

Truthfully, this is just one of those brilliant moments where everything came together. The shark outfit for Halloween, the Roomba out for its daily floor cleaning, the duck on the loose.

The cat is having fun. It wouldn't have climbed onto the Roomba if it wasn't. The human owner filming is certainly having fun. How could you possibly watch that playing out without dissolving into fits of giggles? (You'll get the chance to find out in a bit. I'll include the YouTube video here.) The floor is getting cleaned.

The only creature I can't vouch for having quite a wonderful time is the duck. But it wasn't harmed, and its owner did dive in to calm it shortly afterwards.

You too could recreate this scene at home.  Or many more hilarious moments like it.  You just need a cat and, of course, an iRobot Roomba.

iRobot Roomba 770 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets and Allergies

Best iRobot Roomba for Pet Owners

There are several variants on the Roomba robot vacuum cleaner, but the 770 is currently the best choice for pet owners. It's the one optimized for picking up stray hairs, grit and all of the other tiny bits that your cats leave all over the floor.

Due to its flat dimensions, it can trundle away underneath your bed and sideboard, behind the settee and everywhere else that you'd struggle to reach with a normal cleaner. That means that it's picking up the pet-related debris that you can't even see.

Its filters are designed to alleviate particles that can trigger allergies.  There's a much vaunted dual HEPA system for that. Though what precisely HEPA stands for, I have no idea.

Anyway, you didn't come here to read me waffling on about robot cleaners, you came to see the ridiculously funny cats on Roombas. Let's start with the shark cat chasing the duckling.

Cat in a Shark Costume Chases a Duck While Riding a Roomba

Cats patently love the whole predatory aspect of a Roomba. It's their equivalent of an armored vehicle.

In fact, I saw a picture on Reddit recently, where a cat owner had taken the time to create a whole tank out of cardboard boxes. It was not only perfectly cat-sized, but designed to slot on the top of a Roomba without hindering the cleaning machine's daily run!

Some cats just make do without the cardboard.

Cats have been waiting for the Roomba for a long, long time. As Max-Arthur demonstrates aptly, it's now a cat tank in his traditional war against pit bull Sharky.

Of course, you don't HAVE to encourage your cats in their owning all of the other pets in your house. It IS possible for a kitty to simply enjoy riding around on your Roomba.  Well, their Roomba.

Here's Cody the kitten playing nicely on his iRobot cleaner.

Roomba vs Kitten

Finally, here's Max-Arthur again demonstrating precisely what the iRobot can do for you.  Personally I think that he's just waiting for the ride to begin, but if being a feline salesman gets him the Roomba, then he's all for it!

*giggling stupidly here*! The expression on Max-Arthur's face when the Roomba talks back to him. Priceless. Plus the significance of the name to any SF fan. iRobot. I, Robot. International Robotics. Isaac Asimov.

You'd probably get the cost of the Roomba back in YouTube video Adsense revenue alone. :)

I need a new vacuum, and now I am wondering if my cats would enjoy this one instead of running and hiding. Pinned to my "fun with animals" Pinterest board!
