I love getting together with friends, having a drink, and catching up. And I love the atmosphere in bars, pubs and taverns. Not necessarily on a crowded Saturday night or Super Bowl Sunday, but on a quiet afternoon when we can enjoy a libation and chat the day away. So I've developed quite a fondness for bars around the world. When we travel I usually bring home a shot glass or two as souveniers.

My husband and I are in the long process of restoring a 19th century Maine farmhouse, we are always mindful of creating spaces that encourage our friends to visit, share a drink and hang out with us. We've got this one space that wasn't really a room but it was more than a hall. Well we turned it into the pool room. We added a wet bar and seating area. So it actually feels like a pool table in a barroom and everyone can sit around, watch the players and chat. We've added several shot glass display cabinets, so I finally have a place to show off my shot glasses from around the world!

Because our house is so old, we like our home decor to look like it's been collected serendipitously over a long period of time. We consciously used different-sized shot glass cabinets, with different woods. Some have mirrored backs and some don't. This variety gives our home bar a very lived in and old look.

It's important that either the shot glass display cabinets have moveable shelves or that they have cubbyholes of different sizes. It seems i can never find groupings of shot glasses that are the same size. And we use these shot glasses. I always let my friends pick the ones they want to use if they're drinking whiskey.

We are working very hard to establish a culture and sense of community that is both local and online. I make a living writing online and blogging, we have so many online friends that it can seem so right to sit home and play on facebook. But we firmly believe in balance. So we nurture a local community as well. We are careful to schedule times when we check in with our friends over a drink and talk the night away. Instead of meeting a bookstore we have book clubs in our home. We eat at restaurants to taste new foods, but then we come home to Junior's Cheesecake and talk the night away, surrounded by old keepsakes, collectibles and listening Miles Davis vinyl records.
