Silliest Craft Projects

by Ragtimelil

I have found some craft projects that I would have to label as the silliest ideas going. Take a look and see if you agree with me.

As a crafts person, I spend probably way too much time looking online at crafts. I like to get ideas and inspiration for my own works whether it’s a design concept or a different item to make. I don’t copy what’s out there, but I do let ideas percolate in until the seed planted in my head is ready to sprout and become a new creation.

In the process of browsing other works, I have inadvertently stumbled on pages of what I consider some of the silliest crafts around. Now you might not agree with me. You might have just finished one of these masterpieces and are quite proud of your accomplishment. I don’t mean to make light of anyone’s hobby. If you are happy making these things, I’m all for it. I just have to warn you, I’m not a lacy, pastel-colored kind of person.
Disclaimer, very few of these items have public domain images. I’ve tried to draw some samples so you could get an idea of what they might look like. I have created links to the actual instructions or items available for sale whenever I could in case you wanted to investigate further.

Purse Made Out of an Old Bra

bra purse

I was somewhat shocked and somewhat repelled by the concept of a purse made out of an old bra. I found instructions for the  everyday purse as well as the fancy evening purse. Apparently,by the comments on the page, I wasn’t the only one somewhat skeptical of the propriety of carrying such an accessory in public. I have to say, I probably won’t be making this item.

Juice Wrapper Coin Purse

Recycling is a good thing, usually. This may be crossing the line to silliness. I can’t imagine who would have come up with the idea for a coin purse made out of a juice wrapper. I suppose I should applaud the attempt to make something out of something normally thrown away. That’s how great inventions come about I guess.

Now I have a confession to make. I need a coin purse and I might give this one a try.

Maxi Pad House Slippers

Here’s another one that really is a strange concept. In all honesty though, the people putting these up online know they are silly. Sometimes they are touted as gag gifts  It has become such a fad that there are even people making them and selling them on Etsy.

I can’t imagine that maxi pads as footwear is going to be all that durable. If I had some pads, I just might have to try it and see.

Lace Wrapped Clothes Hangers

This item, a lace wrapped clothes hanger doesn’t look at all ridiculous. It’s an old tradition to pad and cover hangers. Padded hangers are noted for keeping the shoulders of the clothes from stretching out. And adding a potpourri pouch to it makes your clothes smell good. Unfortunately, my first thought was that a person doing this version of a hanger just had way too much time on his or her hands. There is no padding to save the clothes or any place to put some potpourri. It’s just a lacy hanger.

My Silly Craft
Is your dog shedding and you wonder what to do with all that hair? Spin it into some lovely Chiengora.

Clothing Made from Duct Tape

Making things from duct tape has become very popular lately. It’s a fad that has taken off with duct tape shoes, duct tape purses, and my pick for the silliest, a duct tape mini skirt. I can’t even imagine that clothing made of duct tape could be comfortable. It has become such a popular craft that couples attending their high school proms are making their own clothes out of duct tape.

There are plenty more silly craft ideas out there. Of course, what is silly to one person may be really wonderful to the next. It’s all from your point of view. At least there are folks out there trying to come up with a new idea and aren’t bashful about posting it on the internet. You have to give them credit for that.

I try to use up what I have, but often it's the wrong color, the wrong weight, or not enough for the project. That's how stashes get started. No wonder I don't have room to move!

I have fabrics, paints, wool etc. where I thought I had this wonderful idea. Then three days later before I had time to start on the project the idea would sort of go off the boil. I have stopped doing that now, but the back log that needs using up does not always inspire me.
I have also realized that it is not only making it you need a use for it when you have finished it.

You are right about that! I think any artist or craftsperson does a project and later thinks, "What was I thinking?" However, not all of them advertise that fact on the Internet!

Nothing here you would want to get for a Christmas present is there. You have to laugh wondering how people come up with these ideas. I think they might come under the category of it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Well I must say I do love the entire duct tape thing. My youngest daughter has over 12 different patterns and colors. She makes everything with duct tape. Its now fashionable to fix anything and put it back together with duct tape. Great fun article. :)K
