The Jonas Brothers: Teaching My Kids Perseverance

by supermom_in_ny

Being a mom to 7 kids, I always tried to find a way to teach them life lessons they would never forget. Meeting the Jonas Brothers was a lesson in perseverance.

I still remember like it was yesterday. My daughter was on the site whateverlife.com. (It was a myspace wallpaper site). She heard a song by The Jonas Brothers for the very first time. They were a band consisting of three brothers that wrote their own lyrics, music and played their own instruments. They also happened to be a Christian family that belonged to the Assembly of God churches we attended. These boys were getting more and more famous by the minute. All the young girls on myspace had their song playing. They were on Radio Disney and their adoring fans were requesting their music on local radio stations. Pretty soon, the Jonas Brothers were huge. My kids liked them, but my daughter The Diva was the real fan. She spent hours looking at pictures of the brothers with their fans. "I wish I could meet them" she sighed. I took the moment to teach her a very important lesson. "You can meet them." I told her. "They're famous. How could I meet them?" she asked. "Hello?" I said sarcastically. "How many celebrities have I met? Nothing is impossible. All you need to do is plan and execute". I looked at her and said, "Remember, never give up!" This is when it all began.

Teaching Children to Never Give Up

My life has been full of really awesome experiences and horrible ones too.  I wanted my children to learn that no matter what comes their way, they had to go forward to achieve their goals and never give up!  No matter what you are going through, perseverance can get you through.  Trying to get a new job, keep sending out resumes, volunteer in your field and never give up.  Attempting to start your own business?  Create a plan, get funding, work hard, advertise and never give up.  Your attitude plays a big role in your outcome.  When you refuse to give up, you try different methods.  You think outside the box.  You are persistent and optimistic.  Perseverance brings a lot of great friends along such as: determination, focus, planning and hope.  It can help you succeed, even when the odds are against you.

With all of that in mind, I told my daughter to find their schedule on the internet.  We live in upstate NY, about one hour and forty minutes from NYC.  All I had to do was take her there.  I'd find a way to get her and the other kids to meet them.

As you can see from the pictures, she got to meet them.  The bigger story was that we ended up running around the tri-state area going from concert, to appearance to concert again.  It got to a point where their family recognized us and they knew her by name!  Pretty funny, huh?

Most importantly, did they learn anything?  My daughter became very driven.  She decided she was going to study environmental engineering.  Knowing that we couldn't afford to pay the tuition, she focused on getting financial aid.  At graduation, she won tons of awards and scholarships.  She is now in college and as you can see in the picture below, achieved one of her goals of greeting the president of the US.  (She is the one on the left side of the president, dressed in a brown blazer).

My other kids have also learned that if you have a dream, you have to go after it.  Why?  Going after what you want brings success.  For example, my son signed up for the Navy and had to lose weight before boot camp.  It was difficult, but he did it!  I dropped him off a few days ago (January 14, 2013).  I miss him already!  My 17 yr old is signing up to be a Navy diver.  He works out every day and excels at all the physical requirements they demand.  He's ready.  He's hoping to leave soon after graduation.  (That means 3 of my sons will be in the Navy).

My advice to parents is always keep an eye out for a teachable moment.  You want your children to learn valuable lessons they will never forget!

My daughter created this site. She wrote about the meet and greets and concerts she attended. She also posted pictures.

This was really a nightmare. I still can't believe I went through all of this.

Another concert we all attended. The picture that was taken this day of my youngest daughter and Frankie Jonas started circulating on the net with the caption: Frankie Jonas and his girlfriend! LOL!
