Kettlebells are all the rage these days, offering high-intensity workouts in a shorter amount of time than most exercise equipment can provide.

Instead of accumulating a whole set, an adjustable kettlebell is great for saving space, while still offering a range of challenging workouts for all levels. This is great for beginners who will eventually progress to more difficult routines, as well as households with multiple people, all of whom can have a varied workout with a single piece, instead of a giant set taking up half the living room.

Kettlebell Benefits

And why adjustability is great

Kettlebells have become extremely popular in recent years, and it's likely a trend that will stick around for quite some time. Because the weight's center of gravity is further from the body, the same weight can provide a more intense exercise in the same amount of time. The workouts are also designed to engage the entire body, rather than targeting specific muscle groups one at a time. This means a 10 minute kettlebell workout can as valuable as much longer exercise routines, which, as one might imagine, is why they have become so ubiquitous.

And while they're relatively inexpensive, it can get costly accumulating a large set of all different sizes, especially as one progresses to more challenging levels, eventually leaving the smaller weights unused. Adjustable kettlebells allow for a single purchase, which will follow the user through all sorts of workouts, adapting to the needs of the user as he or she progresses. Plus, it's great for several people to share, despite different levels of fitness, all in a tiny, convenient package.

Small Adjustable Kettlebells

2 to 20 pounds

For beginners or smaller people, Performance Systems makes a few very simple, easily adjustable kettlebells, both of which include a workout DVD, so you can get started right away.

The smaller version comes in a set of two, which allows them to double as push-up bars. They adjust to 2, 4 or 8 pounds. Great for beginners, or couples, given the 2-in-1 package.

The slightly larger version adjusts to 5, 10, 15, or 20 pounds, all in one device, great for intermediate workouts, or small to medium-sized people.

Both models include an indentation for accommodating the wrist, which helps with certain exercises where the weight presses against it.

For reference, a 2 liter bottle of soda weighs a bit less than 5 pounds.

Medium Adjustable Kettlebells

10 to 40 pounds

Moving up a few notches to the medium-sized options, these adjustable kettlebells go up to 40 pounds, which, unless you're a particularly strong or large individual, is very likely all you'll ever need. The standard unit of weight for traditional Russian kettlebells is 36 pounds, so the exercises were designed with that range in mind.

The Stamina Versa-Bell goes from 16 to 36 pounds, and includes a small stand.

The Weider SpaceSaver goes from 10 to 40 pounds, and includes a workout DVD, though a few users claim it is not the most durable option out there.

The Cap Barbell model goes from 20 to 40 pounds, with a rubberized base to prevent damage to floors. The minimum weight is fairly high, so it's more suited to those confidence enough to handle this range.

Large Adjustable Kettlebells

Be extra careful...

For the really serious athletes out there, a couple models are available that go up to some very intense levels, allowing for some very serious workouts. These are only to be used by advanced practitioners, and carefully.

The MiR Pro goes from 18 to 78 pounds, and its weight plates can also be used with a dumbbell made by the same company. This model may not have the ease of adjustment as some of the others, but this is more for heavy duty use than convenience.

The KettleStack is a rather popular option, though the item includes just the handle, and not the weights. For those who already have suitable weight plates at home, this might help save some cash compared to some of the pricier models listed here.
