Lightweight Collapsible Shopping Carts: Not Just for the Elderly

While there's no disputing these lightweight folding shopping carts are great for elderly folks, they're a great grocery store companion for anyone using public transport; that includes us 'greenies' who want to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet.

Lightweight carts just make sense--especially once the basket is loaded down to the hilt with groceries or other not-so-lightweight purchases.

Unloaded, these carts are collapsible for hiding away when shopping is done.

Rolling Shopping Carts and My Personal Story

Having experienced the symptoms of arthritis (JRA) for forty years, now, I'm with you on needing a rolling shopping cart or trolley with a seat where I can rest when the need arises.

Here's a great selection of large and extra large foldable shopping baskets for those of us on a budget.

You can use theses lightweight carts with or without the basket liners. I prefer the liners. as those small items stay safely tucked inside.

I also like smooth-rolling, swivel wheels versus the locked wheel design. If you have stairs to contend with, the replacement stair-climbing wheels (below) are an easy remedy and highly recommended.

All the shopping baskets here are lightweight, collapsible and promise to take the load off, big time.

I'll take it.

Replacement Wheels for Climbing Stairs

Don't let stairs keep you from using the shopping carts. I know how tough just two steps can be, especially with a cart full of groceries.

These wheels are specifically made for replacing the standard larger wheels of your cart, trolley or crate. Just be sure your basket can facilitate the size of these wheels.

Heavy-Duty Yet Lightweight: Foldable Pull Cart

Here's my #1 pick for personal shopping trolley/two-wheel pull cart with its built-in seat. I like the cart's well- ventilated large main compartment for groceries or packed lunches and a handy insulated pouch for perishables, plus, the steel frame promises a more sturdy cart, after all, it has a 300~lb. weight capacity.

There's also an adjustable handle for comfort when pulling the cart along and solid rubber, smooth-rolling wheels. The molded, fold~down seat is really comfortable.

Another note: Don't limit this pull cart to grocery shopping, though, as it's great for beach trips, flea markets and anywhere you'll meet with long lines and limited seating.

Two-Wheel Cart: Major Differences Between Push and Pull Styles

You may have heard the two terms, pull cart and push cart or basket. Personally, I need a four-wheel push cart. One great benefit of the push cart is it can act as a support mechanism for us disabled or elderly folks with balance problems.

While the cart is too lightweight to fully support a person like a walker would, you can certainly use it with bearing minimal weight on the basket's handle.

The pull carts have two wheels, while the four-wheel shopping baskets have four wheels. Here's how the cart looks when fully unfolded and ready for resting your feet.

No Built-In Seat with this Shopping Pull Cart but Very Practical

This rolling shopping 'pull cart' is one of those things that leaves me to wonder, Why didn't I think of that? This handy folding cart totes 70 lbs. of groceries on its lightweight but very sturdy 6.5 lb frame (although you'll have to pull this cart versus pushing).

It's lined with hooks (up to eight bag capacity) where you'll hang your grocery bags from, then folds to 31" H when not in use. The handle has been reported to be very comfortable ~ no more sore fingers from plastic grocery bag handles, yay! The easy rolling wheels make the trip home from the grocery store more enjoyable.

I recommend using plastic grocery bags to get the most benefit. I like to reuse my bags and bring them with me to the store (I double the bag). Or, you can use the cloth variety to be less wasteful.

Foldable Superlight Metal Shopping Cart

When a Heavy Cart Won't Do Opt for Super-Lightweight

While all the wire shopping carts here are lightweight, this aluminum model is what I deem uber-lightweight, as it's only 6.7 pounds. It's very easily collapsible and equally easy to fold out.

This cart's wheels are smooth-rolling and are a bit sensitive to large cracks in sidewalks and asphalt, so you may need to pull it behind you for super rough ground.

If you're looking for ultra lightweight wire shopping cart, this one will do the trick quite nicely.

Collapsible Rolling Crate: Lightweight & Space-Saving

Sturdy, plastic collapsible containers, like this one here can support up to 50 lbs. of paper, laundry, drinks, sporting equipment; did I cover enough of the crate's possible baggage?

Really, there's so many uses for this foldable cart; it makes for a great thing to have at the ready whenever you have to haul a lot of stuff from place A to B. This cart collapses flat allowing you to store it under a bed or tucked between your washer and dryer. Lots of uses with less space for storing.

Folding Shopping Trolley Pull Cart with Stair Climbing Wheels

I was really happy to see this lightweight shopping trolley (pull cart) with specialized wheels for climbing stairs.

Even if you're not inclined to shop and use public transportation or outdoor markets, these easy-rolling foldable pull cart will come in mighty handy in apartment, townhouses and homes with stairs.

I have a staircase and the thought of carrying a bundle of office supplies up those steps is not on my fun list. After a successful shopping trip, having extra "arms and legs" with the features afforded by these helpful bags is something to appreciate, for sure.

Like me after a shopping trip, they're mighty collapsible (I had to add that in) and can be tucked away neatly until your nest shopping venture.
