Review of Green Giant Cauliflower Medley Riced Veggies

by StevenHelmer

I purchased this product yesterday evening. Read to find out what I thought of it.

Product Description: Frozen vegetable product from the Green Giant brand featuring "riced" cauliflower, peas and carrots and is prepared, in the bag, in your microwave. I purchased this product for $2.99 yesterday evening at one of our local grocery stores and prepared it as a side dish to go with our fish dinner.

Review

I decided to pick up some fish fillets for dinner last night and, while I was at the store, looked for some sort of side dish to go with it. I had seen various commercials advertising Green Giant's Riced Veggies products and, figuring it would be something different, decided to stop by the frozen vegetable section and pick up a package.

After some consideration, I ended up picking the Cauliflower Medley variety of this product, mostly because it happened to be on sale, and prepared it in the microwave while making the fish. Unfortunately, after trying it, I have to say I really was not as impressed as I thought I would be.

As far as preparations go, I had no complaints. There were a couple different methods for making the vegetable medley and I picked the easiest one, the microwave. This consisted of putting the vegetables, package and all, in the microwave oven for a few minutes and they came out fully heated. As I've said before, I always appreciate convenience when I'm cooking.

I also was somewhat impressed by the quantity inside the bag. At first, I was concerned it wouldn't be enough. But, there was a surprisingly large amount of vegetables inside the bag, enough for several servings and more than enough to go around as a side dish.

Unfortunately, my wife (who is a much bigger vegetable person than me) and I agreed the product failed the most important category, taste. Simply put, there wasn't any. The "riced" cauliflower lacked any flavor of its own and there just weren't enough peas and carrots to make up for that. At least in my opinion, it really needed something else, such as a cheese sauce, to make it enjoyable.

Final Opinion

I don't think the whole "riced" vegetable concept is necessarily bad. But, because this product lacked any sort of noticeable flavor, I was left unimpressed. I might try this again if Green Giant adds some cheese-covered varieties. But, in its current form, I just don't see myself buying this product again.

StevenHelmer, Thank you for practical information, pretty pictures and product lines.
It's disappointing to read about tasteless combinations of carrots, cauliflower, peas and rice. It otherwise makes me think of a way to get children and young adults to eat their vegetables.

Internet searches offer no results for a cheesy version. Some companies put into practice what they hear from their customers. Would Green Giant be amenable to such a suggestion, about cheesing their riced vegetables?

Add soy sauce while cooking the bag of riced veggies in a pan... it tastes flavorful and delicious just like Chinese fried rice!
