Tenerife, an Ideal Holiday Destination

by MikeRobbers

A few reasons why Tenerife of the Canary Islands is an idyllic summer destination for all...

In case you ever wondered which of the islands of Spain is the most popular and the most populous altogether, here is the answer: Tenerife. Tenerife welcomes over 5 million tourists yearly, also hosting around 900 000 permanent inhabitants on an area of around 2000 km², making for almost half of the population of all of the seven Canary Islands. Tenerife seems to be quite a beloved land, despite it being tagged as the "Island of Hell" in the 14th and 15th centuries, according to historical sources such as the maps of those times. That was because of the volcanic activity on the island back then and El Teide volcano, which today makes for one of the island's attractions.

However, Tenerife today is a calm and heavenly place, being known as "The Island of Eternal Spring", as the temperatures and the climate on the island are the ideal ones all year round, with 20–22°C in winter and 26–28°C during summertime. Also, Tenerife has one of the lowest levels of pollution worldwide. Whoever has the chance simply goes to Tenerife to relax or have some fun, being certain that this particular destination will not fail on anyone's expectations.

The southwestern part of the island is very popular among those who simply love to go to the beach, relaxing on the sun beds while hearing the waves and, once in a while, testing the wonderful warm waters while having a swim or a dive. And there is nothing like the view of palm trees at sunset, in the refreshing breeze after a hot summer's day.

Tenerife is a very resourceful island in this sense, with many interesting beaches and resorts. Playa de las Americas or Los Cristianos are some of the island's most famous spots. If you wonder about the services offered in these resorts, find out that they are some of the best, since strict regulations  push the quality of the services up to the top. Also, the offer is broad and the options are plentiful. You can swim, sun bathe, play golf, refresh yourself with either exquisite or exotic beverages, you can try either the best of the local food or international cuisine; in other words, Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos are the best resorts to go to in order to enter the most exquisite summer spirit!

Sometimes it is not the easiest thing in the world to choose your summer destination. Also, if you are not searching for only the most exquisite services, but for the simple treats of sun and sea, the offer broadens and it becomes even harder to choose. There are so many choices, from Greece to Turkey and from Cyprus to the Dalmatian Coast, and we’re talking only about the Eastern part of the Mediterranean. There is a serious dilemma to be faced every single summer when it comes to choices and new territories and resorts to be explored. However, Tenerife is an ideal choice. The island‘s famous volcano Teide is a reminder that this is a rough land with unique beauty that is not easy to be found elsewhere. Tenerife is being considered to be the miniature of a continent due to the fact that it offers a very wide range of landscapes and exhilarating diversity to be explored and enjoyed by any nature lover or mere curious visitor in search of pleasant surprises.

What is more, Tenerife’s capital Santa Cruz offers a great chance to the visitor to discover the modern face of the island. Life in Santa Cruz is always dazzling, but during the winter it becomes even more so, as the city hosts the second biggest carnival in the world, only after the Carnival of Rio. Nonetheless, life is still interesting during the summer, upon the arrival of millions of tourists eager to explore and have fun. In addition, Santa Cruz hosts an important number of modern buildings that shape the character of the city along with old churches and elements of Spanish culture that reveal the past in front of our eyes.

As for the local food, its quality and qualities rank it a click higher than anything that you might have tasted before! The special qualities of the fertile soil of Tenerife turn it into one of those places with some of the tastiest veggies and fruits.  Also, a variety of different plates based on proteins will give you the sufficient energy to endure the wild rhythms that we usually choose for ourselves when we decide to visit a foreign place. If you’re not such a big fan of goat and rabbit meat, though, find out that there is also a wide variety of fish dishes to choose from. Try the salted fish along with spicy sauce – they make for some of Tenerife’s richest flavors! As for the local wine, it is one of the finest and worth enjoying with every bit and bite!

Generally speaking, Tenerife, as well as the other Canary Islands, make for an ideal choice for summer holidays especially for all those who dream of visiting a rather exotic place with a tropical flavor, even though at a rather short distance, if we count Europe as the point of departure in our journey. Part of Europe, but significantly different than all the Mediterranean beauties, Tenefire certainly is one of the most beautiful islands on the planet. Enjoy!

@Derdriu: Both are fascinating destinations to spend your vacations. And the local cuisine is simply delicious. If I had to choose a favorite I would vote for Baifo - a marinated goat recipe that is truly unique! Thanks for visiting and commenting my friend!

MikeRobbers, The Canary Islands and the Azores are such fascinating places to visit. I love it that they both have Atlantic addresses. The visitor can always find exciting things to do in the city and in the countryside. Is there any dish that you particularly favor from Tenerife? Thank you for making Cyberland more fragrant with ocean breezes.

I've never been to Tenerife but I really think I might go - living in London there's no excuse! It's easy to reach from here. That's a great article Mike - thanks! :)

I loved it in Tenerife and the Canary Islands. Did many of the things you mention: went up El Teide, which was fantastic, had some amazing local seafood + tasty meats at a Brazilian carvery, enjoyed the carnival and my friends -- great vacation!:)
Your article is enticing. I hope many more people will get to visit Tenerife. :)
