The Best Gaming Computer

by gameaddict

I'm on the hunt for a new gaming computer that won't completely break my budget. Here are some of my top picks!

Several games recently have informed me, in one way or the other, that I need a new computer. No, neither of my computers (I play on both a desktop and a laptop, depending on where I am and what I'm doing) are that old, but with games with better and better graphics coming out, it has become apparent that I need a new gaming computer. Join me on my search...

Laptop or Desktop?

Most people agree that desktops are able to handle games better than laptops; however, due to the nature of my job and the convenience that I enjoy from being able to take my laptop anywhere, I will probably upgrade my laptop first, as I use it the most. However, a desktop upgrade won't be far behind. I use my laptop mostly for games right now because it has more space than my desktop does (It's a Dell Touchscreen computer [the ones where the PC is actually built-in to the monitor and has no tower] and only has around 12GB remaining of 283 total GBs). Believe it or not, I only have a few games on the desktop, but I've found that include the entire computer in the monitor, a lot of the required software takes up a butt-load of space. I still have over 200 GBs left on my laptop and it has a megaload of games on it (I am an addict after all).

Alienware

I've always wanted an Alienware computer, and I do think they offer some of the best computers out there, aside from one that you build yourself. They have a whole series of laptops dedicated to gaming. The M11x, M14x, M17x, and M18x are all dedicated gaming laptops offered by Alienware. The M11x starts at $999 for the bare-bones, while the M18x starts at $1999, with the other two series having prices in between that range. Amazon does have used options (and a few new ones) with prices slightly cheaper than that, but I'm not sure I want to go the used route either.

HP

I've had an HP Laptop before and I liked it. I didn't have any problems until it got fried during a lightning storm (yes, I had a surge protector, no it didn't help, yes I was probably playing a game on it instead of having it shut down). I switched to a Gateway and have had decent success with it, even though they aren't known for gaming laptops. I'm not sure I want another Gateway though and it doesn't look like they have any specialized gaming laptops, so I may be looking at an HP again. I checked Best Buy and the lowest priced HP laptop designed in their "gaming series" was the HP 15.6" Pavilion Laptop. It has a 750 GB hard drive with 6 GB memory. It features AMD Quad-Core graphics (although I've always been an nVidea fan, I'm willing to make an exception) and is currently priced at $659.99 at Best Buy.

Mac?

With most games being made to be played on both PC and Macintosh nowadays, the Macintosh has becoming a very viable gaming option. I've never had a Mac, but I've heard good things about them and I've heard that they are very, very secure and hard to infect with a virus (I'm not sure if this is true, but I have heard this. I use PC security software regardless and I'm pretty cautious about what sites have my information). Wize.com gives the 13.3 inch Apple MacBook Pro a 95 in their best gaming laptops. Amazon has these from around $620, but again those are for used laptops, their newer ones are more expensive, but the price is still decent. It uses the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card, which is a plus for me (again, nVidia fan) but only offers 160GB hard-drive space. Compared with the other options, this is small, but again it's a Mac, so I'm not sure if they use as much required programs as PCs do in their operating system that takes up hard drive space.

Upgrade my current laptop

Yes, I've considered this option. I've never done it before, but the idea has always appealed to me. I'd have to have good instructions and lots of lots of patience and time to do it. I'd be afraid that I'd screw it up though, so I may just leave it to the professionals. Here's a few guides I might use to repair or overclock my laptop:
