Nervous Breakdown Explained

"Nervous Breakdown", those words conjured up thoughts of possible senility long ago when it was a more common phrase used to describe what happened to people who did not learn how to manage life's stresses, before they took their toll on the person's life.

A nervous breakdown is basically something like a tipping point where a person is forced to finally pay attention to the stresses that impact them and do something about controlling or managing them properly as they are now no longer able to function normally due to the extent that their stress has reached.

A nervous breakdown is like a point of exhaustion which comes after a period of prolonged stress or anxiety in a person's life that could have stemmed from a relationship issue, a job issue, health concerns, financial worries or a combination of a few of these. The ultimate effect of a nervous breakdown is a feeling of helplessness and inability to cope, even with simple life tasks, and often prevents the person from even getting out of bed to face the day.

While this is not actually considered to be a medical condition, it can severely impact your life so it is not something that can be ignored.

A nervous breakdown can prevent you from living normally, causing you to abandon your responsibilities. Even parents have been known to abandon their children when they are having a nervous break down. It doesn't matter if it is a newborn infant or an older child, a mental or emotional breakdown can cause a parent to bolt. Think of it, they cannot even handle their own life and basic functions, such as getting our of bed each day, so how could they possibly nurture another? It's a sad truth about this condition.

What is a Nervous Breakdown?

Depends on who you're talking to.

Symptoms of a Nervous Breakdown

What to Look Out For

When someone has an acute emotional or psychological breakdown this is what is called a nervous breakdown. It is not a medical term as this is not considered to be a medical condition. However, that doesn't make it any less important to pay attention to. A person experiencing a nervous breakdown is unable to function normally. They usually suffer with severe depression and feel like they are no longer in touch with reality. The culprit here is stress that has been allowed to go unchecked for too long a period of time.

The inability to function normally will usually occur both in the person's home or family life. as well as, in their work life. They have tremendous difficulty meeting their obligations in each, which adds to the stress in their life. A nervous breakdown, while mental, also has effects on the person physically and emotionally so it has an impact on all aspects of a person's life.

You might find this person crying uncontrollably at times, confused or disoriented and feeling worthless. They may suffer with fatigue very often as well. Nervous breakdowns usually bring on feelings of guilt, a sense of despair, reduction in self-esteem, poor sleep patterns and, in the most extreme cases, a total inability to move. All of this can be fixed once you attend to the issues so do not fear that it is irreparable.

Here is a list of the symptoms of a nervous breakdown (Physical,Behavioral and Emotional);

1. Diarrhea or Constipation
2. Fatigue or extreme exhaustion
3. Poor sleeping patterns eg. Insomnia or oversleeping
4. Headaches, often Migraines
5. Mood swings
6. Memory Loss
7. Extreme changes in appetite (Over eating or eating too little)
8. Anxiety
9. Loss of self-confidence and self-esteem
10. Inability to make a decision
11. Inability to concentrate
12. Depression
13. Restlessness
14. Uncontrollable crying (for no apparent reason either)
15. Withdrawal from social interaction
16. Increased usage of drugs and alcohol
17. Displaying extreme anger
18. Expression of the desire to die

In some of the extreme cases the person may note that they hear voices in their head or see people who are not present. Sometimes they express a feeling of being persecuted that does not depict reality. Some have behaved as strangely as undressing in public. Others have feelings of grandiosity.

As you can see, a nervous breakdown is a complex, total mind and body experience brought on by excessive stress left uncontrolled. The good news amongst all of this is that these can be avoided simply by learning how to relieve stress.
