The Shrigley Heiress Abduction 1826 ; Cheshire
It reads like a Mills and Boon bodice ripper but it is absolutely true. Incredible. These days no school would hand a child over like that to someone who turned up to collect them . Ty for posting.

Deer at Dunham Massey, Cheshire
You are right to see the significance of Dunham's proximity to the Roman road, for it remains a major artery even today, though the original road is deeply buried neath the modern surface. It aims straight at the ford at Stretford [Street Ford] ...

Forte Colle Delle Benne - An Austrian fort in Italy
Grapes are not usually allowed to grow too low and near the ground, as there can be slight ground frosts in Spring that could damage the grapes.

I suspect, like me, you enjoy taking interesting photographs to share. It is interesting to see views of Dunham Massey because, many moons ago I wrote a book Animal Graves and Memorials which featured local dogs "Poor Cato," "Poor Tipler" and ...

What an amazing story. It seemed double tragic that she should then die so young. The house looks amazing. Thanks, Veronica.

Forte Colle Delle Benne - An Austrian fort in Italy

Forte Colle Delle Benne - An Austrian fort in Italy
Very close to the top, you can see how the grapes were thriving in the photo. We were already at quite an altitude. Just a few hundred feet below the summit, there were grapes. They were covered over and supported by frames off the ground.

A windlass is a roller attached to a handle for winding. The rope is fastened to it and the bucket to the other end of the rope.

Were vines growing on the mountain top? If so, how did they fare? I am keen to know.
