We had a nativity set both at our own house and at our grandparent's house - I say 'we had' because it felt like 'our' nativity set. Why? I guess because both were hand made by kids - us kids or a previous generation, I'm not really sure.
Of course the result wasn't all that pretty. Each was really a mix of bought items and hand made ones. Some of the hand made ones weren't that ugly, but others certainly were.
Some were made from paper, others of clay and wood. We had a stable, manger, Maria, Joseph, child Jesus, shepherds, donkey, sheep, wise men, the star - the whole crew.
The advantage of BUYING a toy nativity set is of course that it will look just great. However, will it still be suitable for polite company after the kids have played with it?
The in between option is something like the Melisa and Doug nativity set. It's child friendly - more child friendly than some of our home made pieces in fact - and yet it looks great.
The Playmobil Nativity sets (yes, there are more) are obviously primarily meant for play: let your kids play out the Christmas story and enjoy themselves. The toy pieces can be reused in other playmobil play during the rest of the year.
Personally I really like the cute Fisher Price Little People Toy Nativity set. These three dimensional pieces are cute and of course will withstand any toddler trying to eat them.

To me a nativity set has to be child friendly. We had a home made nativity set at our grandparent's house - and I think I made a few of the pieces myself. I'm not really sure. The charm was definitely that it felt like 'our' nativity set - and since we spent every Christmas at my grandparent's house, in many ways it was. No other children played with it, after all.
If you want your children to have the charm of being able to play with their nativity set, but you also want the nativity set to look a bit better than ours did, a toy nativity set really is a good idea.

I really like nativity sets, it put us in the right mood with Christmas season. As a kid I had toys with nativity, and I remember Grandma tilling me stories at bed time which actually started my Christin education at early age....
